Depends what channels are in use in your area, i have same problem here. Around 15 wireless networks in my flat.. all channels covered.

But crossing wifi channels can cause issues, http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ was advised here for me to check what was available.

Well I was thinking more about this

I've also turned the wireless off on Superhub, forcing it too modem only, since it's got shit coverage and has firmware problems sending data through it's firewall on the default channel. Especially a problem if there are a lot of hubs near by in the same street. I'm using my old n rated D-Link for wireless. It works a treat.

I must have already changed the channel when I last setup the wireless connection because it's on 5.

I live in a small block of flats too and there are lots of wireless connections. I will download that app and see what channel would be best, thanks for the link.

Doubling everyone's speed is a pretty big job - we've got over 4 million Virgin Media customers who will receive double speeds, but rest assured, my fittest, fastest engineers will be in your area between October and June 2013 and going as fast as they can

lolwut?

so lame in the UK, we can thank Maggie Bag Thatcher for that. It was her government put the straighteners on the PO and BT for 10 years so that private cable co's could come along and carve up our streets in the name of a 'free competitive market. The UK's proper stitched up on technology because of her lot.

we have a few diff ones the problem is British Telecom was left as the sole provider for so long and never updated the cabling etc so when it was all sold off and the new companies started rolling out they all had to play catch up to get the equipment in place years of lack of money being used to update shit ...someone will corrected me if diff reasons Smile

BT still is the only "provider" all the other companys are just piggybacking off BT's stuff. BT are the only ones that are updating the copper system by adding VDSL2 (lol fibre.. no)

VM are still updating old hardware that is Ex-NTL and Ex-TW hence how these upgrades are so random from place to place. Some areas still only have 1.75Mbit upload.. when other areas had 5Mbit since a year ago.. its a total joke.

Ah for us in the NL, the coax cable is owned by Ziggo and UPC, but both have seperate area's they cover, so there is NO competition between both.. (both offer 120mbit, Ziggo at €67 with it's all-in-1 package (HDTV/Phone+free call to other ziggo users/internet). UPC you pay for the same package €83,50)

DSL (Phone internet) is a different story tho, cables in ground are owned by KPN but there are like 10 or so different ISP's that rent from KPN. (fastest vdsl here is 50mbit at this moment)

Fibre is going to be from the state (asfar as i know) and they will rent it to different ISP's again.

The reason for BT's massive under investment is that for ten years they were forced by the Tory government at the time to abandon any investment in developing cable as a viable solution. They started testing for 512kbs in the very early nineties. Because Thatcher and co wanted to generate a free market for telecoms they enforced a 10 year restriction allowing them to continue to develop cable, in a bid to create a competitive market. Blue Yonder, NTL and Diamond Cable appeared on the scene late 90's and spent the next five years digging up the countries roads with varying levels of infrastructure and customer service and the back of BT’s trunk cables. Over the entire time BT were in a prime position to overhaul its entire infrastructure with cable, but were prevented from doing so.

This political medalling and destruction of the utilities companies has left a terrible legacy for development in the UK. The exact opposite has happened in many European countries, particular were the state has paid for upgrades in infrastructure.

I'm getting worse speeds since mine has doubled. Sometimes I get the full 60Mb dl speed, but a lot of the time it's more like 15Mb. Before they doubled the speed I would always get 30Mb. Just 4 months until my contract ends.

Hmm that's not good news at all, as you I always got a solid 30, did the fluctuations kick in straight after the upgrade or weeks/months after it?

First noticed it a few weeks after being upgraded. It could just be my connection or something though.

Its definitely Virgin, mine has now started playing up. Emails take forever to send, pages won't load or load excruciatingly slowly and my speed fluctuates wildly. My mate who lives across the other side of town also has had the exact same problems since the upgrade.

Have you checked the cable modem itself? You might need a router or modem upgrade if the one Virgin originally provided can't handle the higher speed from the doubled bandwidth package.

I did consider that but my friend whom I mentioned, was originally on the speed I am on now and we have exactly the same router and his router coped ok. Also, you would think that Virgin would have considered a possible hardware upgrade may be needed to go hand in hand with the speed increase and implemented it.

Well my time on Virgin, and NTL prior, they always DID advise that some customers might require a modem upgrade to handle higher speeds .. which is the only reason I mentioned it Smile But if your mate, on the same line and modem, has no issues then I guess it's more an infrastructure thing Sad

I might give them a bell in a bit and mention it. Or maybe the modem software needs a few tweaks? Its a good job there has been nothing PC gaming wise worth downloading so far this year (or very little) Smile
