There are also a few old ones, like Shuttle and Microsoft Space Simulator.

Shuttle was da shit. I remember that game well. The amount of buttons
the cockpit had was massive. I love the fact that you had to to wait
2 days for the shuttle to get to the launch pad (if you didnt accelerate time).

Apperently there is. Orbiter 2005. I havnt tried it out myself, but I heard its a very realistic Space Sim. Like Microsoft's Flight Simulator, but in space... and with shuttles.

Its free so check it out if you want: http://www.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/~martins/orbit/download.html

Thanks

You should try Aquanox 2. It's underwater, but pretty close in feel to space, and it had a good story/missions.
And there was an older, even better underwater game, whose name now escapes me. It had a huge one map and exploration was awesome.
Edit: yes, it was Subculture.

In addition to Aquanox 2, you have its predecessors, Aquanox 1 and Archimedean Dynasty. There's also Deep Fighter and a really old one called Sub War.

Some games that are set on the surface of a planet (or planets) but are like Freelancer or Privateer are Hardwar, B-Hunter, and Crime Cities. Then you've got the ones more like Wing Commander, like the G-Police series, the Incoming series, the Echelon series, Yager, and a host of others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

I just remembered a more free-form space sim called Terminus. The most notable thing about it is that a copy of the game can play on Windows, Mac, and Linux. So if you have a Linux box and want to play something on it besides Tux Racer, that one works.

One last thing: Stay away from the Battlecruiser series. It was recently renamed "Universal Combat" to try to trick people into buying it, so beware.

Freespace 2 was the best spacesim/shoot em' up by far on the pc. Epic dark storyline, great music and voice acting, and tight controls. All about the beam cannons!.

It's older then freelancer but far superior in my opinion, still doesnt look too bad nowadays too and can get a visual upgrade via the open source project mods.
