yeah... Consoles doesnt need that much ram. And in 7 years there will be even new console.
It really is IMPOSSIBLE to build a machine that will be relevant in 7 or so years. Impossible. Even if it costed a plenty

Why the older series AMD cards? Why not take a leap and use the newer ones?! wtf...

$$$ companies want to sell consoles at a profit, not a loss.

Console manufacturers always sell their consoles with losses. The console itself is only a means to pull consumers in, games is where the money is at.

The current gen consoles have been struggling with memory issues for a couple of years now. Developers have to work around that limitation by making concessions, none of those concessions has helped gaming.
I'd rather have console designers use old boring tech which they can cram a lot of into the new console, than some experimental new tech which costs a shitload.

And imagine that microsoft wanted 256mb of ram in 360... Epic is the one responsible to ask m$ to put another 256 in there, after showing waht Gears of War looks with 512 and with 256

The Wii is a great system to compare it to, because a console launching in 2013 with a low-end GPU from 2010 is very similar to what the Wii represented in 2006.

These are currently just rumors but this isn't something that wasn't expected. There are plenty of devs and publishers saying that secong-hand trading causes them more losses than piracy itself.

Think of it like steam.
You get one account with all your games on it.
there will probably *probably* be some form of activation that temporarily ties that account to that console.
You change console you have to authorise the account on that console and it disappears from the old one.

The major problem I see with this is what happens when you really need to be online all the time? What when the online service gets abandoned, like Xbox Live for the Xbox1? I know this could be the case with Steam as well, but Steam itself doesn't have a timer on it like a console does, which will be outdated in 5 years.

Online Activation wont happen, still waaaaaay too many people who dont connect their consoles to the net i think they sold like 70 million consoles by now and only about 40 million xbox live profiles (dont know the correct numbers but i think i remember something like that) of which at least 10 million are second or third profiles on the same console (i have 4 on mine) and another at least 10 went online once or twice since they got the console just to check it out, and now got the console in a room with no wired inet connection or dont even bother to connect it. cant leave the majority of your buyers without the ability to play games = online activation on consoles not going to happen any time soon.
I bet every game will have an online pass in the next gen and thats about it. Can't imagine any other way how they could implement a console lock, writing to the disc physically to lock it to the console seems unrealistic to me, since as you guys already said, if your shit breaks, you would also loose all your games which would also be inacceptable.
However, all this is a shame, since if they could implement something like that, the hacking community would be all over that shit, because there would be a totally legitimate and legal reason for everyone to hack their console, and we would probably get a hacked 720 earlier than otherwise

It can happen. People don't connect cause it's possible to play offline. With online activation as the only option they WILL connect, simply cause that will be the only way to play. Internet is very affordable today, only few people will have problems with that

Nah, can't happen. I have a few friends who only have UMTS sticks for internet access, which would make it impossible for them to play a game. This is really not that uncommon here, since its pretty cheap. Then there are a lot of countries where not every gamer has a broadband connection. Furthermore Wifi still sucks balls. I needed to add a repeater in my parents house to make wifi availabe in my old room, which is just 6 meters away from the router (but through a thick ceiling <- no probs here for us citizens probably, their cardboard houses should let the wifi signal pass through ). Most people won't do this, and don't even know thats possible. So there are still a lot of children which don't have wifi in their room. And parents are not quick to drill holes through all the walls . Then you have the crazy "wifi gives you braincancer" crowd, which also could only play games in their dedicated "Internet room". While I agree that a big chunk of gamers would be ok with the transission to always on play, there are still waaaay too many people who would not buy the console for that reason. The main-stream media would also jump on that as soon as the console would be announced with comments like "MS is forcing you to stay always on to play games, for many people this will equal additional costs due to higher traffic" <- which is not true for 99.9999% of the cases, but will also scare off some veeeeeery casual kinect players .
So an online requirement won't happen this next gen, maybe the next next gen but definately not this one.

online requirement probably not needed I agree about that, but you probably do need to activate it once with interwebz connection.. because thats the only way they can lock an game to specific console.
