It's an image with all the russian space achievements and for the americans it's just that they were the first on the moon. Guess it's from 4chan/reddit

Thx!

I particularly like the other comparison between NASA's spending millions in developing a zero G pen and the Russians using an pencil! Laughing

How are 'First x in space' relevant for today, and yet landing on the moon is not?

While having a laugh at USA is always fun, landing and taking off the moon is a substantial obstacle and it's a great accomplishment that cannot be undermined.

While your reasoning would be valid for any other nation, when it comes to the U.S. it is not a step forward but rather a step backwards, for an entire civilization which already landed in America, there can be no greater accomplishment to be made, the hardest and most challenging of all quests has already been achieved, there is no greatness in a moon landing if you already landed in America, it is you undermining the greatest feat of Human history over something as meaningless as landing on another planet. In fact, some will argue that God himself was born in America and only then did he decided to create the rest of the Universe as a proof of his magnificence and good will. Laughing

Or they believe that there was a 13th apostle who lived in America and that followers should wear special underpants to church. Not kidding... even the leading Republican candidate for president believes this.

IMO, all those are achievements, all of equal value.

It doesn't matter who did what in the past, it's about what comes forth out of this in the next xx years that matters Smile

Yeah, it's hip to poke fun at the US and at the same time glorify communism/russia. Great message, too. That picture couldn't be more biased.

I like how they point out the two space shuttles exploding yet don't point out the numerous deaths of the Russian space program. In terms of safety NASA had a far better record then their soviet counterparts.

Also, look up the Corona / KEYHOLE programs. It could be technically said that the US really had the first space station.

I think it's more about poking fun at the surprisingly dominant thinking in US that they "won" the space race just because of the Moon landing while ignoring the accomplishments of others. It's kinda like that WW2 thing that the USA won almost single-handedly. The image is not entirely fair and probably was made with wrong intentions, but it does have a point of sorts.

Not that landing on the Moon was unremarkable - it is without a doubt one of the greatest achievements for mankind, but it was a culmination of all the efforts that came before, and thinking about the whole thing as a competition that some particular nation "won" is stupid, in my opinion.

Personally though, I consider the first satellite launch as the most important one, since that was the very first step that kicked off the entire race... and that whole space program thing Smile
It also affected more than just the space development... DARPA was created in response to that, which in turn, led to (among other things) the creation of The Interents! Makes you wonder...
