|
 |
I've never been a fan of laptops but it looks like the gap is closing these days and i like less clutter and the ability to easily take it to friends houses for lans.
So whats a good one? I'm looking at the ASUS G74SX.
Or should i just stick to desktops?
Cheers.

I don't know about specific models but if you check different laptops try to find more detailed specifications, it's pretty common to cut down on the GPU power for example and also CPU while trying to sell with the usual 4+ GB RAM and 1+ TB HDD or similar.
(And also think about what you need and what you will use it for and compare from that.)

You can't really have a gaming laptop at anything less than 17", and that's not really a laptop anymore. So I'd say stick with desktop and get some small laptop like Ultrabook.

I had one for a while, but i hated the fact that the gpu chip gets fast old and cant be replaced. Besides that its just much more expensive and not so much fun as a desktop (changing parts, hw-tuning etc.).
I loved the mobility though.

I've got a setup with a desktop and a netbook and it works perfectly. Netbook + desktop cost me less than what a laptop with desktop performance would have. Besides, upgrading and fixing a laptop is difficult and expensive. I've also experienced that high-end graphics cards in laptops tend to break surprisingly quickly. This may just be a coincidence, so it might be wise to await input from other forum members on this.
You might want to consider getting a cheap tablet instead of a netbook, though, if you're into portable entertainment. But when it comes to portable productivity, nothing beats a netbook at this moment in time (Windows 8 netbook/tablet hybrids are coming this summer/fall and will hopefully provide both a platform for both productivity and entertainment).
edit: Basically what Phil2003 said

Don't do it.
What Phil2003 said, expect to pay a hefty price for something that won't be nearly as fast, durable or versatile as a desktop.
Also don't forget about overheating, most laptops just aren't suited for long gaming sessions or any other work that greatly stresses your CPU and GPU, the air flow within is very poor.

Don't buy a gaming laptop.
It's a huge waste of money.

thanks, these are the specific stats for those interested
Intel Core i7 Generation 2 i7-2630QM 2.0-2.93Ghz TURBO
12GB DDR3 (1333Mhz) system memory
2x 750GB 7200RPM HDD, BLU-RAY Reader/DVD Writer Combo
17.3-inch LED FULL HD (1920x1080) Glossy
NVIDIA GTX 560M 3.0GB DDR5 Dedicated Graphics DX11
I tell ya, i've being playing all the best games on the high-end budget geforces and i only have to update every two years or so, and even then it tends to be for new features like dx11 not speed.
It just feels like graphics have hit a plateau and even the laptop GTX 560m would stay current for years.

so this might sound mad, but I had a couple of alienware lappys in the past , all performed ok, but lots of money and many other solid performers are quite expensice too.
So might sound odd but I got medion from sainsburies just before xmas, gtx 460M, ITB drive , Blue ray, I7 , 6gm ddr3 usb3 cost me 699 new ( pretty much half the price of the eqwuivlent Alienware.
Sadly that deal aint on anymore , but if budget is a concen check out
http://www.medion.com/gb/electronics/cat/MEDION+ERAZER+Special/erazer_37
they aint fancy but you get a lot of bang for your buck
also you dont want a glossy screen mate, u want Mat

Well, for around 750 quid you can get these:
Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3
Intel Core i7 2600K + Scythe Ninja 3 rev. B
Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti Golden Sample 1GB
KingMax Nano Gaming RAM 4GB DDR3 1600MHz - 4 of these
Seasonic S12II 620W
CM Storm Scout for easy transportation
And it's upgradable. Also, add a HDD of your choice.

Seriously. Definite waste of money because any half-decent spec machine is only going to have 2-3 hours battery life while gaming, which means you're going to only get the full use out of it when hooked up to the wall .... and if you're doing that, you'd be best off spending less cash and getting a more powerful desktop rig. |
Waste of money
- battery life will eventually go to shit and replacing it by that time won't be worth it
- cpu, and other stuff won't be upgradeable or upgradeable at a fair price
- gpu can get busted after serious wear and tear and it's extremely expensive to get it replaced, even 2nd hand
- heat, heat everywhere, even if it's properly cooled, if you try playing on maximum settings after 3 hours or so it'll get really really hot, then the build quality will really show if it's any good, but even so, after 4-5 hours of playing something demanding you'll feel the hot air come through the keyboard.
- due to exessive heat, unless it's made out of aluminium the plastic inside will wear easily, paint will fade away, never buy a white laptop since it needs extra special attention, but even then, the whiteness will fade away and it'll become gray, keys can get a yellow/green-ish tint if the plastic is shitty
- after 2-3 years it'll get really heavy to due newer tech being light, 3+ kilos will feel like 10 compared to newer laptops
- price, you can built a really good spec for a little over 1 grand (just the unit)
- if it's shared memory, just forget it, you'll see desktops that with shittier spec running the game better
- value depreciation
In conclusion, buy a MacBook Pro
I'm pushing 5 years with my Acer, i spent about 1100 on it back in 2007, a waste of fucking money. Still runs nicely (GPU got busted after about 3 years) but i don't use it for gaming, i finished Battlefield 3 on it on 640x480 and got a shitload of screen tearing @ 10 fps.
The next laptop i'm going to buy will surely be and ultrabook, hopefully they'll get up to 15.4 inches.

Once the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony become available, graphics won't be the same.

Yeah, ikr, but I was just saying what a marvellous configuration you can build with that amount of money. And you can carry it around at any lanparties you want, you CAN UPGRADE IT. That's just an advice for the OP. An alternative to your choice.

Aye it's a waste of money. I spend $1100 on my Lenovo laptop and I regret it year later after purchase. I thought I would be playing games too but I only played Soltaire on it!

can't be replaced? what kind of crap laptop was that? I've had several laptops and i've replaced the GPU in two of them without problems. You're extremely limited though, there arent many GPU's to choose from.
What i dislike with gaming laptops is that they usually get too hot for serious gaming, and overclocking is out of the question too because of this.

Personally, I prefer more laptops that "can play games", then "gaming laptops".
You know, something that can be used for playing moderately demanding games, when desktop is not available, and that can still be used for other non-gaming uses 2-3 years later.
It's cheaper and more cost-effective.

Lack of performance on any front aside, there's one thing about all these "awesome" laptops thats destroys it:
Auran13 wrote: | 17.3-inch LED FULL HD (1920x1080) Glossy |
Never again. On most of these "gaming" laptops matte is also not an option. My T42 had a wonderful matte screen and it's the one thing I hate about any mobile device nowadays. Almost all of them are glossy, which destroys the point of it being mobile.
That particular screen was 1440x900 + IPS as well though..7 and a half fucking years ago. Wish that became standard..
