Laughing Incompetent company. This is just unacceptable, say what you will, but when you prepare a massive event, which is we all know a PR thing and a stress test more than anything, and you have your ENTIRE hardware fail along with the servers... that isn't going to paint a pretty picture in the consumers eyes. Multiple MMO's have had massive events like this, all had connection issues in the first hour or so, but they remained stable and it was quickly solved (SW TOR, WoW Cataclysm etc.)

Edit: Also, just like to point out, I'm not mad they cancelled the event, afterall, they had no obligations to hold any, but still, they should've come fully prepared.

Hardware does not simply break. And even if it does, it is something you ANTICIPATE and get prepared to quickly handle it. After 2 days they still didn't fix anything.

Sorry but that answer is just stupid, hardware DOES simply break. Happens more then enough.
Perfect example, SSD's that simply break without a single warning.
Tho servers usually have a backup system, so they prolly corrupted their whole database somehow (and their backup's maybe too?)

Point is, they should've anticipated and be prepared for that. I'm not saying what happened is their fault, it's not. I'm saying they did not handle it properly, and they probably did come in unprepared. They are not the only ones, lots of devs do it these days for some reason. Just look at EA/DICE and BF3 Laughing

Yea, not denying that they could had atleast some backup systems up and running by now.
But saying that hardware doesn't simply break is so wrong, maybe you got lucky and it never happend at your rig, but i have had it often enough Sad Razz

The "hardware problem" isn't really the issue, it is the companies reaction that causes more concern. From the lack of preparation, which can be excused to some extent, to the fact that they announced another start time for today then waited until that time hit before telling people they where still fucked.. It just doesn't show good management, forethought and certainly hurts the companies credibility for its future release.

This! That's the main issue. Frogster doesn't really have a good reputation as it is, this just makes it worse. It shows their inability to handle the, I think I can say, basic stuff when it comes to MMO's with lots of players (Hardware fail, connectivity issues etc.) And above all, they never really said what went wrong, and why does it take them so much to fix it.

I can't say this bodes well for the game, but I'd hardly call it a big deal. They fucked up a sneak peak something fierce, but if the game is great - and they get it under control for the next beta event - this will be forgotten instantly.

I'm not really interested in the game, as it looks silly - but I'm curious about all MMOs and I'd love to check out the combat.

Still, the only two MMOs that I have high hopes for are GW2 and ArcheAge. Most others seem bland and boring in comparison.

Has anyone considered that the point of short closed beta's is to stress test the servers so they work on release?

Incompetence would be appropiate when they repeat this on release.

The point of this "sneak peek" was to market the game, bring out more interest in the western world. It was not at all to stress test. If that were the case, they would've called it a beta.

I dont fully agree since, using your first server load for marketing is something no sane company would do.

Yes, they did fuck up, but to hold a grudge against them and going all out fail and saying that it's shit because of 1 little mistake, is just wrong (Not pointed at you Sin, just in general how people sometimes react)

Tera NA closed beta is scheduled to run from 10th - 12th February. You can snag a key from IGN Prime, if you don't have a Prime account, use the 7 day trial.

I would beg to differ. I think it's more of a stretch that Frogster will somehow fix the problem of gross incompetence that seems to follow them everywhere they go. As for hardware failures there is always a reason why hardware fails the reason may or may not be obvious. This is why you keep replacements for any eventualities. Sounded more like they were having software and load issues to me. Methinks someone's DB couldn't handle the traffic.

Suffice to say if anyone responsible for the failure was working for an ISP their shit would have been chewed out a long time ago.

Thx for tip, but I somehow don't want ANOTHER 23,7GB to sit useless on my HDD. Unless one can use somehow the EU client with the US beta...

EDIT

Besides, Prime Trial account requires my CC info. Yea right... !

Meh, screw this! I'm outta here. Very Happy

Quote:
Will En Masse IP block based on region?

To keep the quality of service high for players within North America we have decided to disable IP addresses from which fraudulent traffic originates. We encourage players in these regions to participate on servers specifically designated for their area.

We block IP addresses used by hackers

En Masse will block IPs based on region. Asia, Africa, Russia, and the Middle East are included on the block list. While we appreciate that there are players in these regions who would enjoy playing on En Masse servers, it's unfortunate that the vast majority of Internet traffic we see from these regions are from cyber-criminals relating to account theft, gold-farming and other hacking behavior.

What about proxies?

Services that promise to improve your ping and decrease lag may sound promising, but they are frequently used by hackers and criminals who want to remain anonymous. Although we do not block them by default, a proxy or server host will be blocked if it becomes a popular tool for criminal behavior.

Playing TERA outside of North America

If you want to play TERA with friends in another country, here’s what you need to know:

You can play TERA on En Masse servers from North America, South America, Europe and Oceania.

En Masse has a license to operate TERA game servers in North America. This means that if you are in North America, South America, Europe (excluding Russia), and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia) you can play on En Masse Servers.

TERA is being published by En Masse in North America and by Frogster in Europe.

You don’t need to be located in North America to play on North American servers but you do need to purchase TERA through its North American publisher, En Masse, and register it to your En Masse account. Check out how to set up an En Masse account.

To play on European servers, you need to purchase and register TERA through its European publisher, Frogster. You’ll find Frogster at http://frogster.eu/en/products_tera.html

Important shit underlined, so no IP block Smile

Thx for info!

If they wouldn't have screwed up so bad, I'd be very interested in joining this NA beta, despite the additional "hassle". But, somehow, my personal interest for this game has been lowered dramatically. Smile

NA client seems to be smaller than the EU one. It's downloading 13 gigs of data vs I believe 18 or something in EU. The launcher is also a lot prettier than the Forgster one.
