When I read how the publishers he met with thought of games as SKU's I was reminded why I always become less impressed with people when they tell me they have an MBA.
To me it's the same as telling me, that you, in fact, am completely bereft of imagination.

There's an interview with the head honcho in a Dutch mag, some interesting quotes. Larian had some great experiences with publishers. Some paraphrases:
Quote: | The developers should get the biggest share, they don't. That's not right. Of the 50 euros, 25 goes to the retailer/distributor. The publisher gets 20 after deducting costs. From that the developer gets 4 euros, after which the original investment of the publisher must be repaid (he says this is a typical deal btw) |
Quote: | The most important is the banker element (i.e. the publisher), that's how a publisher enforces rules and usually gets the IP. Recently I got a list of purchaseable IPs from a publisher. It was four pages long! Each title on that list is a developer. That's blood, sweat and tears and they don't care. If those devs got a fair share, they wouldn't have gone bankrupt. |
Weirdest thing:
Quote: | Recently I saw a dev was sitting in a motel and the publisher in a five star hotel. The young developer didn't even realize he was paying for it. It's marketing and PR, deducted from the royalties so the dev pays. When you're on a conference like E3 or Gamescon, you're paying for the thing. |
Quote: | Letting your game get financed by a publisher is the worst thing you can do, a bank or invester is far better. |
Oh as for why there aren't more studios focusing on RPGs, apparently publishers want to see preview codes now and then and those are impossible to make representatively for an RPG. Publishers don't seem to get an RPG is a connection of several complex elements only being fully apparently close to the end.

I was always under the impression the publisher did all the marketing and PR, on their own cost. So WTF does a publisher do? It seems to me they're glorified loansharks and overpayed marketing studios.

That's pretty much it, from what I've gleaned during talks with people in the industry. The publisher basically foots the development bill.... and that's about it. Glorified loanshark, as you say. Though if a game is really high-profile, the publisher will put out a huge ad campaign, but that's rare.
There are game devs on the forum, so I'd wait for some first-person input.

If I was independently wealthy, I'd totally invest in a game dev. I'd love for those guys to get a fair share. Only thing I'd like in return would be my investment. The devs could keep the rest.
I'd have my game, and the devs would be paid. Sounds fair enough. But I'm sure it's not as simple as that.

The cost of dialogue: http://www.lar.net/?p=100#more-100
Lar is now posting his updates on his blog so feel free to follow that if you want to know more about the game and... I guess the gaming industry in general.
Also, why he started doing that is explained here:
Quote: | My name is Swen Vincke.
I’m the founder of Larian Studios, an independent game developer based in Gent, Belgium. Larian Studios has been around since 1997 and I’ve been running it ever since, so it’s fair to say that Larian is a large part of my life and that I take whatever happens to it quite personal.
The Lar & Larian names come from my favorite dog whose name was ‘Lar’. I also used it in the highscore lists of old arcade machines which only allowed you to enter three letters, so I guess it stuck.
The incentive for this blog was being called an idiot for the nth time by a certain Sergei Klimov, our newly appointed director of propaganda and publishing. His publishing outrage was focused at my habit of occasionally writing status updates on the Larian Studios forums. He said I might as well write my status updates on some wall in some desolate radioactive village and expect the same amount of readers. While I disagreed with that I succumbed to his pressure anyway.
My intention is to bring you regular updates not only about the life and tribulations of a game studio head, but also about how the games industry can be a vampire if you’re not careful. |
It's from the Me section of his blog.

This guy seems to be going all out against publishers. Hopefully such honesty will give other small devs the incentive to share experiences. I doubt it since it would take a dev studio with huge balls and extreme confidence (like Larian), but it could happen.

Another interview with Swen, now from RPGCodex: http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/swen-vincke-talks-to-the-codex.69170/
The interview was made in december last year it seems, but it's a great read. I really recommend reading it.

Supposedly, there will be lots of C&C in Dragon Commander: http://www.lar.net/2012/02/06/choice-consequence-in-rpgs/
The entire blog is quite interesting really. They seem to be taking an idealistic gamer's approach to game development. Hopefully, it's all as well thought through as they portray it to be.
(edit)@DarkRohirrim: Thanks for the codex link! With their frontpage gone, I'm missing most of the news over there.

Yeah even the style is extremely different from their previous games. Seems promising but honestly I'm not 100% convinced yet

seems like i have to get the collectors edition.
After viewing that video of the game the jetpack seems way overpowered if it's only available a limited time as a dlc before the game is released. I bet it's just an easier way of obtaining it.
