You're right, I'm being way too harsh to this game. The story is really good, especially for a new comer who didn't play the first one and got used to the style of that game, in witch case he won't be bothered by the gameplay changes in this one. For me, the CoD effect and gameplay changes, added more to the "-" than the "+" in my overall evaluation of the game.
They stripped the detach option for the demon heads in exchange for 2 scripted segments where you play as a darkling. I do however like the darkling in this one, I think that's a welcome change.
And one fucking annoying thing is that half way through the game almost all the lights are indestructible and there are no dynamic shadows what so ever in a game that asks you to stick to the damn shadows!
Even storywise some stuff feels too forced, to the point where you just feel like the game (director) is toying with you.
For example in some parts of the game Jackie is purposely overpowerd because the game wants you to feel a certain way; it's a thing used often in movies, books, video games, catoons, anime(especially in anime and asian movies/books) etc, pretty much every medium that can have any sort of story in it, and it's cheap as shit and I find it insulting, especially when it's done in such a puerile way.
Not even going to go into the fact that they stripped the hub style world, and it's a linear game this time around + the fact that it's about 5 - 6 hours long. And at the end, it feels like half a game (witch doesn't surprises me at all seeing it's a 2k joint game).
The Darkness 2 is a rollercoaster and if you get that from the start, you'll enjoy it a lot, but if you expect something in the style of the first one, you'll be more or less disappointed.
P.S. Oh and about the car door shield, no matter witch one you snatch it's always going to be the front left door; talk about attention to details in a 6 hrs long linear game!

I would have really liked if this game would have been 10 hours or so the reviewers would have ponded on it saying its repetitive

I agree with you with the linear part.
But when digital extremes anounced this sequel, they said it was going to be more action and story based, i already knew that was going to be a linear game , so i was already prepared for it.
Its the only thing i have to say that i didnt like, because the first darkness was an open game, you could use the train and use the phone.. do side-missions,etc.
If you could forget that "linear problem", they made a good sequel , they kept the amazing story with great dialogue and some of the best voice acting on a videogame.
The soundtrack is still amazing, and they improved the gameplay.
And they let you walk free/talk to/do mini-games with Dolfo in your mansion (not a 100% linear game).
One thing i was afraid was the "cell shading/comic book " graphics, but i simply loved it, amazing engine! Suits this game 100%.
The online is good, not like the first that was there for nothing, you get a story campaign and hit list missions to do in co-op or alone.
I just get amazed by the so call critics, because call of duty games is the same linear shit over and over again, with an graphics engine that have more then four years, and still gets reviews of 10/10 and wins awards. Im not saying the game is shit or bad, but damn.

First is better for sure, for many reasons. (Being open its one of them)
But this is a decent good sequel, they kept the most important elements of the first... story & gameplay & voice acting.

Just finished this as well, in a single sitting.
Mixed feelings about this after just playing Binary Domain. Not a bad game, not that good either though. 6/10 for me.
