ha OK, the gameplay is just a shit. No other word to explain it. How could developers spend so many years and finally just find out this kind of fucking annoying ghosts. Uninstalled it already, after only one day of playthrough.

I'm about to start this game, should I play on hard or nightmare mode? I lake challenge but I don't want the game to become frustrating later on, so is nightmare really what the name implies?

i sort of agree on that but not really, i mean... the story so far is good and immersive and for once it doesn't feel like it's tacked on for no reason other than the people who cry if it's not trying to be a summer blockbuster movie, i mean the main character is an accomplished writer, if that has a shit story you really have to be depressed about the state of civilization.
the monsters though, i agree on those, it feels like open air monster closets more often than not, i'll think i've cleared and area and one more pops out of somewhere, it just feels like when you'd play street fighter in the arcades against one of those asian guys who'd spend literal entire days in front of the same machine and never lose, one trick pony, just pin you to the wall and be a cheap bastard with the same tired old trick.
i am liking it though, to a point, it's well paced, the fights are very challenging and there for the most part isn't too bad of a gap between them where you get to the point you feel like you're playing two separate games, it's nothing i'd say was exceptional or all that great and i definitely won't be buying it but it damn sure was a LOT better than i expected from a console game.

Just finished the game and I was surprised of how good it was. I enjoyed it very much, even the gameplay, which like everyone pointed out, it was the weakest link in it.
During parts of some episodes they should have found a way to implement better and some poor textures showed the age of the game, but overall a very pleasant experience.
And did you catch one particular scene?
Spoiler: | In the tv show that aired in a flashback in the beginning of episode 6 Wake was a guest in some tv show, next to him was Sam Lake - the game's lead writer - and right before the end of the scene he is asked to make a specific face again. Max Payne 1 was modeled after this grimace |

I'll go out on a limb here and say ... I enjoyed Alan Wake more than Max Payne. Or at the very least as much.

so, from what i understand reading here, the biggest spoiler of all is:
(this isn't a by the way)
Spoiler: | alan himself is the real fictional character in the story? |
normally i'd avoid asking or finding out the answer to things like this but i don't see myself playing it again, it was a nice surprise, for a console game though.

ah, it ends with a to be continued screen then?
glad i didn't bother to try forcing myself the rest of the way through it then, can't say they did badly though, that's one hell of a good plot twist if that's whats going on and i would have never seen it coming save for reading this thread either.

Yeah, they made it in a TV show kind of a way, complete with "Previously on..." intros/outros.

yeah i had to take notice of that too, figured they were selling it to console noobs 30 minutes at a time, i figured since it didn't abruptly end and demand money between them that we'd gotten lucky and the pirates had managed to snag the complete edition thing.
honestly though, the real reason i'd be forcing myself to finish it, i just couldn't shake the feeling that i was using a mouse to emulate an inferior console controller.

Access to a new internal beta version is possible (for better mouse controls):
Quote: | But if you want, you can preview our upcoming improvements to Update 2 - we weren't ready to roll it out to the general public, but if there are adventurous people willing to test the game with improved mouse control, you can now add "-beta AWBeta" (case sensitive, without the quotation marks) to your Steam client shortcut, restart Steam, and you should see a v1.03 of Alan Wake downloading.
This supports a parameter called "-directaiming" that incorporates the rigidcamera and takes it further. There are also other fixes too along the lines I've listed here: http://forum.alanwake.com/showthread.php?t=7978 |
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."

The game is good fun as it is.
Some more posts:
Quote: | The volumetric effects (with the cookie-cutter textures) on the light sources are VERY GPU heavy. Unfortunately we originally kind of fell in love with them...
I guess we turned the quality knobs a bit too high on the PC version. Surprisingly enough, the effect itself is not that trivial to "tone down" while making it still look good (toning down the parameters makes the effect look very grainy quite easily and is also very much dependent on the end user resolution settings).
I'll have a chat with MarkusM and our rendering ninjas if we could get some in-between state(s) still added... (instead of the current state of being completely off and being completely heavyweight).
SamiV.
Mental note: We should add a "Turning on this effect will cause a -10 change on your FPS" guidance for GPU/CPU tweaks on our next PC game. (Of course the change should be in milliseconds but that's developer talk...) |
The 360 version used the "low" setting.
SLI support slowly coming..
Quote: | Working on SLI, takes a bit longer, that. The engine has so much inter-frame dependencies like autoexposure, taken blur effects etc that decoupling that is not a job for the tepid and weak As soon as possible, my word on it. |
Quote: | I'll just say we burned two GTX580's and one SLI motherboard yesterday. |
Quote: | For the technically minded only! Absolutely no Warranty!
Update 2 didn't quite make it to Steam this week, but we have a beta. And if you are interested in checking out where we are with the SLI support, it's theoretically possible. But to be clear: IT'S NOT READY OR FLAWLESS, there's some flickering with autoexposure and issues with the taken blur effect left.
The testing procedure would be as follows:
1) Add -beta AWBeta (case sensitive) to Steam client shortcut and restart Steam
2) Download the v1.03 update for Alan Wake
3) Copy steamapps\common\alan wake\alanwake.exe to AFR-FriendlyD3D.exe
4) Create a shortcut to AFR-FriendlyD3D.exe and add -gpucount=2 command line parameter - start game with the shortcut
With this version though it should be possible to create a SLI profile for AlanWake.exe that would work without the renaming trick.
Anyway, if you try it out, let us know what you think.
NOTE: With AMD Crossfire we recommend running as is - no beta, no tricks, no command line parameters, just using the AMD 12.1CAP3 AlanWake profile. |
Mod "support":
Quote: | Well, the game files aren't really encrypted or anything. Kind of wondering why they haven't been unpacked already, it's not like we made it hard.
Why don't we release an unpacking tool? Because we have never made one. |
Quote: | Repacking is not necessary. Extract files and run game -> game prefers extracted files over files in pack file.
But the data formats of the extracted files are custom. |
Quote: | I should create a Mr. Scratch doppleganger of myself which could give hints on how to reverse engineer things. AFAIK just too busy right now. None of the (pc) data formats are that hard, they just happen to be very much customized to fit our data streaming tech...
Good work so far. |
Latin American voices free DLC coming soon:
Quote: | I have just successfully played a beta version of the game with the Latin American Spanish dialogue (downloaded from Steam), so after a bit more testing we can hopefully get this out in the next few days.
It'll be a free DLC "Alan Wake LatAmSpanish" and after downloading you can launch the game with a certain command line option - as Steam as a platform doesn't have a concept of Latin American Spanish (and unfortunately our Alan Wake tech doesn't allow switching the game language and fonts on the fly... Something that'll surely be fixed for our next big thing...)
Just like for the other audio supported locales, there will also be a "Force English Audio" option in the sound menu just in case you want only the LatAmSpanish subtitles and not the LatAmSpanish audio. |
Other info:
Quote: | Alan Wake does use a deferred renderer with hardware antialiasing. It's not a light prepass engine. There's about 50 different rendertargets per frame so it's not that straight forward to explain what kind of a renderer it uses... |
Quote: | Sukov, if deferred rendering with HW antialiasing (and with DX9 would be easy, everyone would be doing it...
As Alan Wake ships with it - it's not impossible, but there's a few tricks you need to invent. |
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."

over all i liked the game, but i kinda wanted a little more. to me, the best parts were the opening 3 episodes... yeah they're all 'forest' and feel kinda samey, but i just felt that because you really didnt know what the fuck was happening, it somehow had more impact. conversely, i found the last bits of the game kinda lacked 'punch', if that makes sense. i wanted some big power packed emotional ending, that sadly never came for me.
i still enjoyed it. theres quite a few missteps in it (pausing the game and calling attention to almost every enemy encounter, and silly possessed vehicles for example), but i found it much more enjoyable than many other recent games... just didnt like how the story played out in the end (liked the overall STORY, just not how it was handled late in the game).
still have the second dlc to play through, so im not finished with the 'story' yet, though i dont think it excuses it from having a kinda lacklustre ending just for the sake of making dlc and a sequel.
and i say lacklustre ending, purely because it started so damn well. the ending is still much better than most games manage, and i do want to repeat that i DID very much enjoy it.

Hey Chiv, while I do agree about the ending, would recommend that you definitely try out the second DLC. It's much better than the first one and has some memorable moments. Plus you get to spend more time in the Alan Wake universe (which is always loads of fun).
Wish they would come out with a proper full-fledged sequel already; don't care if it's on consoles as long as PC isnt neglected this time.

The fixes, that are being incorporated suggest, that they are paying attention to the players and they support the PC post launch. I know this should be the absolute minimum any and every developer does, but these days such behavior stands out. I mean, ME1 and ME2 still don't have anything close to proper mouse controls.

yeah im definately going to do the second dlc.. ill likely do it tomorrow. if anything, id probably tend to be a bit overharsh on the game, because i really think it could have been something truely landmark, if not for some dumb design decisions. it does atmosphere fantastically (which is probably one of the hardest things to get right in a game), visually its design is stunning, the story is interesting, the voice acting and presentation is great, and the sound design is absolutely brilliant.... perhaps alan wake 2 will be the one to get it all perfect.
if anyone wants to reminisce a bit, ive uploaded quite a few screens to steam (only upload my the best ones, but theres already over a hundred... its such a gorgeous looking game visually (low resolution textures and some models aside)
http://steamcommunity.com/id/shivnz/screenshots/?tab=&showdate=1&filter=app_108710
and I still have something like 400 screenshots still to sort through and find the best ones to upload from the last chapter and first dlc

@consolitis
Thanks for the updates! More and more I'm convinced that Remedy really does care about the PC, a great deal too, lending more credence to their earlier claim of "Microsoft wouldn't let us do it" in regards to AW. I'm really looking forward to seeing what else they come up with =)
