If Dragon Age 2 had been released under a different name, it wouldn't be considerred so piece of shit. Series quality, however, and expectations people had after the first title, obliged the developer to deliver a product that's somewhat similiar to its predecessor at least in terms of gameplay mechanics. Here's where Biowere failed completely, this is: took a shit on all gamers that made first Dragon Age sell.

Er, do you really think that? That game was just bad by any standards tbh. It definitely was bashed a lot harder because it was a sequel to DA1, but that doesn't make it a good stand alone game either.

Not really, to be honest. At least, not for me. I wasn't that much of a fan of the first DA anyway and I didn't mind that it wasn't like the first DA anymore. What bothered me was the amazing amount of cheese in the writing, the idiotic way of making the combat harder (enemies getting more health, more enemies spawning from nowhere, etc.) and of course, the areas recycling (what the fuck were they thinking?!). The game would have been just as shit for me even if I wouldn't have played the previous game.

I agree that different name wouldn't make the game any better, but I also think, it wouldn't be bashed so hard on every possible occasion either. It would be remembered (or forgotten) as an average wanna-be RPG.
But since it was Dragon Age, it now has become a symbol of Bioware's demise and streamlining evilness. (And I'm no being sarcastic here. DA2 fully deserves this.)
Take Kingdoms of Amalur, for example. Heavily consolized game that doesn't arouse so much resentment because it doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is. (DA2 pretended to be a worthy successor to DA1.) Besides, neither has it to compete with it's acclaimed predecessor nor meet the expectations of franchise fans.

Well...it's kinda already been done. In terms of RTS's it was done with homeworld/2, with space sims some of the SCP(freespace open) mods come very close to carrying it out. And the entire industry seems to have turned their back on space sims anyway...which is a damn shame.
