Because some people are terrified of the dentist and would rather be asleep during the procedures? Shit, I'd take general any day of the week if I were given the choice.. sadly they don't seem to offer that these days.

Not usually for impacted wisdom teeth. Lots of hammering/sawing on the jaw. General is much easier for both the surgeon and patient. I had all 4 of mine done at the same time back in high school, and it was done under general at the oral surgeon's office.
