Anyone else love him some good rain in a video game? Nothing helps me chill out, relax and forget that I am only playing a video game than atmospheric calm/stormy rain sequence. Only with excellent sound and headphones that is.

What are Your favourite rain sequences in games?

Mines first place goes to Mafia1 countryside night mission. First -its night, second- its a storm and sound is incredible. You can hear different effects when rain is hitting barn roof, grass etc. and its a god damn mafia!!!

GTAIV - night, stormy rain, driving by in a taxi back seat, with journey radiostation on and forget it is only a video game. One of those easy to recreate moments for me. Just need to put my headphones on, chill out at the middle of a night in dark room and cheat myself some rain. Then GTAiv gets 10 times better. Also some of best rain reflections.

There is plenty of other games like Timeshift, heavy rain(obviously), black mirror(night, old mansion), gemini rue, prey(only first scene at the bar), overclocked(adventure game), Gears of war factory.

Any other similiar experiences I have missed? I am sure some humpers like to relax and just enjoy the atmosphere at least sometimes;)

The STALKER games are absolutely amazing when it comes to atmosphere and weather effects, but The Elder Scrolls games are pretty good too.

Don't forget to check L4D2's Hard Rain campaign, it's extremely relaxing Cool Face

I fucking love it, and it's a mechanic that is woefully underused in games.

Some of my favorites (some of which you already mentioned) -

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - The game had phenomenal rain storms with the help of a few mods that enhanced density/thunder/wind sounds. By far my favorite. Nothing quite like just chilling by some lake down south near Chechendayle (sp?) and just taking it in.

GTA IV - It hardly ever rained in the game, but when it did it was so goddamn awesome. It made it very peaceful and lifelike. Absolutely adored driving in the rain. Were there ever any mods released that increased the chances of it raining?

Timeshift - Rain used to great effect to set the atmosphere during the opening levels.

Everquest II - Not so much the rain itself, as the wonderful detailing the ground/cloth had to show it was slick after it rained. Awesome use of graphics for its time.

Mass Effect II - Lair of the Shadow Broker - The only time rain is ever used in the entire series if I recall correctly. It gives a real Bladerunner'esque feel to the scene, and lends a bit of "humanity" to Illium. Great scene, but again, woefully underused.

Heavy Rain - Obviously. The only game I've ever played that used rain to convey almost the entire feel of its story. And it does so wonderfully. More developers ought to look at it to see just how much you can achieve with the mechanic.

I wonder why designers/graphic artists give so little thought to weather effects when it comes to gaming? I can't imagine it's that intensive resource wise to implement, and it really DOES make all the difference when trying to convey a certain emotion during a scene/game.

Edit - And in case anyone didn't know, http://www.rainymood.com/
Very Happy

This. When the hurricane comes to town and you cannot hear anything but rain, it sounds like the real thing.

no love for witcher? it was a very gloomy and depressing world to begin with, but the rain always kicked up the sense of depression and bleakness a notch for me whenever it rained. it seemed to tie it all together and make for a really downtrodden and harsh world for me.

Morrowind had great thunder and rain effects that's why it comes first in your mind.

As is Morrowind. Can't recall off-hand what the weather & sound mods I used were, but the combined effect was amazing.

Seriously guys? Why was The Witcher mentioned so late? It's by far the best game in terms of this. I also agree with Timeshift, Chaos Theory and the Hard Rain campaign from L4D2. Most of the other games (especially the TES ones) pretty much suck at this.

Pretty much what everyone else said so far(especially The Witcher 1 where everything is so moody <3), but add the Gothic games to that. G2 especially.

I can't remember how moody the rain in Risen was. I feel like there are definitively some moody moments with rain (the plains with the abandoned tower, where you team up with that hunter and where you meet the druids, come to mind), but not sure.

Shame they fucked it up with G4, that rain tech sounded soo cool when I first read about it.

Oh, RDR had some great moody rain moments. Better than GTA IV. And it has some of that G4 tech where every thing gets wet and puddles form up.
