Genius idea. He's really thinking ahead about all this stuff.

Way to selectively quote him. Rolling Eyes I don't have a problem with the entirety of what he said in that section. At all. Also note he said "perhaps". Nothing is set in stone. He's just tossing ideas around.

We are fleshing out the ideas but intend to increase the social aspects of the game without diverting it from being an old school RPG and without hurting the balance.

We have received many questions about multi-player, and my feeling is that we do not think it would be the right decision for such a heavy narrative RPG. Even in an open sandbox world there are sequences and clues that need to happen in order for things to flow and make sense. This is not an MMO where we create instances of one-off events and scenarios, but it is a deep fluid world in which your actions do matter later. I don't want a game where my buddy triggered an event I didn't know and causes a repercussion for me, and at the same time I don't want to see every little event that my buddy sees to insure I didn't miss it. Multi-player is a design issue and not a technical one in this case. However, we will introduce social elements like I hinted at above so there can be a communal type experience. * Note this would be TOTALLY OPTIONAL should you want to share.

not to mention this "update to the update"

Everyone remain calm....

There has been a lot of panic that any kind of element of sharing will ruin the classic old school RPG. I think some people are overreacting to the word "social" which I can kind of understand. But here is the bottom line. We will post a description of our thoughts in the forums and if YOU the fans still don't want it then we will not fight the majority. We can now get back to our normal shouting.

I think the online element sounds like an awesome idea. It sounds like what they had in Demon's Souls/Dark Souls.

sounds like an ingame email system where you're penpals with your friend counterpart in a parallel universe, comparing notes

a coop mode could be a fun addition
like portal2 or ss2, only playable with both players
if they leave the engine moddable enough, could easily be added by fans later on

I'd rather see that exta 500k going towards improving other parts of the game, the ability to leave notes and items seems pointless to me. Kind of funny that they've already hit a point of contention among people even before the funding is finished.

Uh, they didn't say that they'd be spending the entire $500,000 extra on that one feature. It's just one of many that they'll add. If you'd read the updates, they've said time and time again that the main thing that happens as the funding increases is that the size of the game and the content in it expands. They're not going to blow a quarter of the budget on an online note-sharing system.

This would be epic if this actually comes though. We are talking about an RPG here that after all these years is still a cult classic. One of those games that still has life where all current crap games with high production values and all the current tech are forgotten about in a year or less.

Even if it was, who cares? Don't fucking use it. Not like it would take away a ton of development time to put that in. So for something that won't impact the story or gameplay at all, that you never have to even see, what's the fucking problem?

I don't know this series, and i just can't support it based on nothing or looking at a youtube video of a 300 year old game that means nothing to me (never played it).

It's a shame really :/

Then don't. That's the beauty of it. There are enough people that were/are fans or who ARE willing to take a chance and support it that it's funded. Those that aren't can just wait and see how it turns out when the project is finished. Then you can decide then. Works out for everyone

.. and that's the point. We aren't curious. Or rather, to not speak for everybody else, *I* am not curious. I don't give a shit about who killed how many mutants, or what ammo they used, the very idea is abhorrent to me. Keep that stuff to MMOs or online shooters -- or at least keep it to standard forum posts where people manually discuss what they're doing in the game. I really don't want some kind of nonsense leaderboard or comparison functionality as I don't believe this kind of game benefits in any way from that.

It's refreshing as all hell to see a dev that is so blatantly open and forthcoming though, I have nothing but respect for Brian Fargo.

Yeah, almost. Reading the comments on that update make for some unpleasant reading. Paraphrased?

"Don't let fearmongers influence your game! I, for one, would love a mailbox system where we could trade ammo!!!11 Social aspects like that would really make the game so much better!!!"

.... oh god.

Yeah, I'm reading them Crying or Very sad . Luckily there are a lot of people who actually (rightly) believe that social features are a waste of precious time, resources and money since this is supposed to be an old-shool SP-only rpg experience. Though my sensation is that a compromise will be reached in the end and something onlin-ish will be put in the game anyway..

As long as anything "social" is absolutely optional and doesn't take resources and development away from the base game in ANY way, that's fine by me. The kickstarter broke $1.5m and there is still 21 days to go... so I'm really hoping $2m is possible Very Happy

What's nice about the idea he has is that 1) it's much more simple for them to implement and won't take much in the way of time from the more important aspects of the game. And 2) it'd be 100% optional so you don't *have* to see anything you don't want to.

Those are the reasons I have no problem with their social stuff. It's not forced on me and won't affect the game at all for me.
