You could also check out Universe at War. It might not be among the genre's greatest but still entertaining.

Magic & Mayhem (the first one, not the dismal sequel). One of Julian Gollop's best games. Tons of atmosphere.

Epsilon: Game is great btw, I love it, so far it's a definite goty. It's remarkable how much has changed since the beta, stardock have been working their asses off, and it shows.

Dungeon Keeper perhaps, though that's mostly because I've been watching various videos of it lately. Razz

Spellforce series perhaps but it mixes in certain RPG elements.

Don't have many RTS titles installed currently, have to go trough the new Shogun 2 addition some day and Worldshift is installed too but I don't remember it much.

Some of the Command & Conquer titles are pretty good too. Smile

I can't think of much, Hfric covered a bit of everything with his post above (And the earlier replies.) Ground Control wasn't mentioned though, first one was pretty good as I remembered.
(Battlezone 2 is another old but rather nice game, still has a active community as I remember meaning the game is modified pretty extensively now and should work on most modern hardware, still it mixes in some FPS elements also.)

I used to play this old RTS title with a ugly blocky aliens fighting some crude humans, worked by gathering DNA and building via that but it's probably ancient by now (It's not Evolva either.) Heroes of Annihilated Empires and Kohan series might be worth mentioning too.
(Also something called Disciples or what it was again but it's probably not that, wasn't about these various factions in a Heroes of Might and Magic setting.)

Age of Empires and Empire Earth might still hold up as well, not fully certain about that, later titles should work quite well but Empire Earth III got pretty harsh criticism, AoE III should be solid however. Smile

Lots of other titles too I can't fully remember come to think of it, or not as I can't remember much.
(Age of wonders - shadow magic for example and some others.)

EDIT: That alien game was Dominant Species and it really was ancient. Razz

EDIT: Earth 2xx0 trilogy maybe?
(2140 2150 and 2160)

EDIT: Populous?
(Maybe not.)

EDIT: Sacrifice?
(It was a pretty good game though but mixes in some other elements.)

If you prefer a RTS with a 4x flavor, try Sins of a Solar Empire (with its 2 or 3 expansions). It's like a fast-paced civilization and huge, beautiful starship battles.

BTW, that reminds me, any1 can recommend a good space strategy similar to homeworld other than SotSE?

i still laugh at the comparison drawn here to chess, TBS my ass!

chess is about knowing the correct opening and correctly assuming how your opponent intends to play, memorization, nothing more!

Smile

while we're on the topic, i wish WiC wasn't such a horrible game, it had so much potential, if only it had implemented a competent base building and unit management system instead of simply shackling you to 3 units near randomly and allowing a fucking timer to dictate which you bring into the battle.
