Greetings,
I know that at least ONE piracy thread has been posted before, but i want to make this one specificaly about torrents, and its comparison to p2p networks and dcc file sharing and other methods(needless to say the so called "scene").

It has come to my attention, that the FBI(Federal Bureau of Investigation) and the United States, is now focused on Torrent Networks. I was about to open a Torrent Site, but i decided to take a tour around the net to see what experience other webmasters have with US Federal Laws concerning torrents, some where hilarious, such as the pirate bay, but that is hosted in Sweden, and no piracy laws apply. I have googled for Sites hosted in the US but i could not find any that have been threatened. Anyways, i want to know what your imput on Torrents is, and why do you think, or dont think that they should be taken down, or(like i was/am about to do, make a site promoting them)...I know most of you scene ppl dont like that Sad

First, i must explain that torrents contain NO COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS whatsoever, it just contains a hash of information to get to another persons computer(the seeds) so you can upload the file to your computer(becoming a leecher)....(then again you already knew that Razz)

Specificaly i want to know what would be my protection if i wanted to post Warez Torrents and what can the FBI or whatever company do about it.

Thanks for replies.

You should ask the FBI... Smile

About Hitman: Movie (2007)
Vin Diesel is a hardcore gamer, and absolutely loves the Hitman series. For that reason I have faith that he wont destroy the movie.

Response: Well, Uwe Boll probably loved the Alone in the Dark games.

All torrents should be wiped off the entire Internet. They're consuming way too much bandwidth (40% of the entire capacity in the glory days of suprnova.org) and each torrent transfer requires uploading, which is illegal under all circumstances. Only the retardedly short-sighted call torrents not illegal for being merely a hash. By the same reasoning, an M16 assault rifle is nothing more than a cleverly designed piece of metal which is only lethal when some goof ball is foolish enough to stand in front of the rifle, right?

I hate people who think like this, I understand the scener elitists will always look down on torrents but excluding the whole illegal downloading aspect of it (which is extremely convenient, especially for things like TV shows where you're too lazy to sfv and rar the files) there are many perfect legal applications for torrents. For example virtually every Linux distro I download, podcasts, big game mods, big game patches, free online shows such as systm which can be huge.

Torrents are ingeniously simple but powerful piece of technology.

This is all coming from someone who does have access, you guys need to get over your elitism.

well, considering that the scene is not so hard to have access to, it is not like i am some warez kiddy that just goes around looking for cracks on altavista or shit like that. It is because some things that get released in the scene(after a long time, we all know that they will become unaccessible unless you request them) therefore torrents and irc are good ways to get them. as for the person that thinks that people are retards because they say that torrents are only a hash and not the real file, get your facts straight, it is only a hash.

disscussing this on other forums(phpbb.com) some of the users there feel that they should arrest the "seeders" that r distributing the illegal files instead of taking down the servers.

Personally. I dont like torrents. dont find them easy at all. I use way better sources for my *updates* and Demos than torrents, IRC or ftp. All of these are way to slow. I wouldnt recomend setting up a torrent site, i have done no research in this matter, but i feel why bother. Do you want to do this to make advertising money? If so, your scum.

Im not sure why anyone would setup a torrent site other than to try and make money, and that is very, very wrong. Making money off the works of others is one of the most imoral things a person can do.

Saying torrents contain to no Ilegal materal may be true when reading the letter of the law. But come on, use your head... just becasue your using the "Grey Area" of the law.

Just my 2 cents

Why do you torrent haters hate torrents? Razz
With torrents you always get full speed, and you don't need to wait..
With IRC you sometimes have to wait for hours, maybe days..
And it's not always you get good speed..
On DC it's hard to find stuff, and mutch harder to find good speed..
FTP's are better than torrents if you get in and if it's fast..

I hate you.

That's a very general statement that hopes for a general answer that isn't there. Yes, to people with a limited connection, and limited access to hubs - DC is quite slow. But DC is a protocol, like any - and it's speed is proportionate to the users that frequent it.

For instance, there are hubs that limit visitors to 10Mbit connections, meaning only 1,1MB/s UP/DOWN at least are allowed.

Since I visit such hubs from time to time, my experience of DC is quite pleasant. But I wouldn't be foolish enough to go out and say "DC IS FAST LIKE SHIT!!!" - because that's just a too general statement, and general statements are rarely, if ever, true.

To put it simply.

Hosting Torrent files is not illegal as such, it is a grey area but as they do only contain a hash it would be complex to hold something solid in court on this alone.
Hosting a torrent Tracker is seen as Illegal as this supports the physical uploading and downloading of the illegal files, this is the main reason why sites get shut down.

Torrent Site + Tracker = Shut down, Fine, Jail time.
Tracker = Shut down and a slapped wrist (maybe a fine or small jail time)
Torrent Site = Anything could happen, but you might survive with your butt still in working order Smile

Bit Torrent is a wonderful technology when used in the right ways, I don't feel downloading illegal files comes under this. More so when your in a house with 4 people all trying to download the same file from Bit Torrent that you had 3 weeks ago, and your internet connection grounds to a hault. It sucks.

Startting a BT website is a bad idea simply based on the fact that it is under the watchful eye of the world. More so startting one in the US as you would be found very quickly and then made to pay for whatever damages the site may have caused. Face facts, Sweden is where its at, the US is watching you..

yeah i uses also ftp´s and torrent ... and both is good in a closed community ... irc is the biggest shit ever seen (laggy, slow, fakes, nups, kids, spam, just everything) ... it never was good. On Bittorrent i get everything i want thats good (like all the lost press dvd´s on german... ) ftp´s are great for bigger files, but i buy alot because iam not unemployed ^^ so na no idea ... but the scene isn´t that what it was 8 or 9 years ago

I always wondered, when a user downloads using BT, they usually don't upload the same amount they download. So if they download a movie, or an album, but then only upload 20% of it, completely unusable by itself, could that still be called illegal, and what sort of fines would be involved?

Who cares about torrents. If we didnt have torrents even MORE people would be requesting here Laughing

I remember, only three years ago when there were no torrents yet. Everyone came to me to ask for games, music, movies etc., and Im not really a big shot lol. These times were great to filter out the idiots from the real deal. Anyway, torrents can be usefull sometimes, to get old stuff you can't find anyware else. Files never corrupt and u can resume at any time. And it works like magic to get porn let me tell you that Very Happy
