Sad, but not surprising. They don't have big names to throw around like others do, only TQ which has somewhat of a bad rep.

When you lash your anger to the people (no matter what they were pirates or customers) and not to the company that had a shitty security that allowed your game to be leaked with over a month before the release, you don't get much love.
I think that they should've never mentioned Titan Quest. The game was a bugfest mainly because of the protection (and we are talking about the legit customers here). It was crippleware and the answer for any litlle complaint on theirwas: "you are a pirate", despite you making pictures with the original product to prove that you are not.
I know that was the upper management that handled the Iron Lore poorly, but the guys from the Crate are paying now for them.Unfortunately...
So, yeah. Not much love for them.

I think an Obsidian RPG would do way better now than it would before the Double Fine and inXile campaigns. Getting arsed to sign up is typically an important limiting step, and the mentioned projects sure made a lot of people open accounts over at Kickstarter.
On the other hand, the smaller projects might suffer now that there's no extensively profiled games drawing people to KS. It's going to be interesting to see what will happen when Shadowrun is funded, as it's currently the last "huge" (1 mil+) video game project.

Obsidian might be able to raise quite a bit of money if they go for crowdfunding. But they also need to come with a new IP. The D&D license for making videogames is at Atari (that includes Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate and Planescape, as well TOEE and Neverwinter). The Fallout IP it's at Bethesda, Dungeon Siege belongs to Square now, Alpha Protocol belongs to Sega and KOTOR is Lucas/EA.
But Kickstarter it's the best place to start a new IP or revive some old ones. We'll see what they'll decide.

Actually, I think it's split between Atari and Hasbro for now. Atari still has the rights for certain titles.

Yeah, their old titles. Hasbro handles future licenses way I understand it.

I'd absolutely love a new Obsidian IP with MCA and Tim Cain at the helm of development, having full creative freedom. I suppose I belong to the minority though, as most people seem to want Torment 2. As much as a Torment 2 would make me happy, I'd actually prefer a brand new world to explore and be awed by.

some great news:
Quote: | I can confirm that I have talked to Serge through email and he is ready to contribute an additional $100k to the project. Since he was offering to transfer the money outside of Kickstarter (KS limits pledges to $10k) I felt that it would be best to ensure that we reached our goal first. Although we look to be on a good path to reach our goal, should something go wrong, we wouldn't want to be in a position where we've accepted a large contribution like that and do not have the rest of the funding necessary to deliver what we've promised, when we've promised it. I'm confident that we will reach $280k in the remaining 23 days though and, once we do, Serge's additional funds will be a huge benefit to the project. |
