It's not just installing OS and reinstalling the old apps. I'm really really scared of having to back up and organize everything and getting some apps i've had issues in the past with to work properly. And then it takes me about two months of constantly realizing i've forgotten to install some small insignificant plug-in which i need.

Id go with MSE and malware bytes.
haven't had much luck with spybot last few years. it use to be what I installed on my my family and friends PC as a "run this when its slow" hands off approach. but last year or 2 it seems to miss a LOT that malwarebytes finds.
MSE and MWB is whats on all 5 pcs in my house, and my kids and wife find all KINDA crap to click and they stay pretty clean. nothing it doesn't take care of.
also SuperAntiSpyware is rather good also. despite the horrible chessy name.
just my 2 cents.

1) Go to msconfig and disable all uneeded startup shit. Restart.
2) Run Ccleaner and do a temp-file and registry clean. Uninstall it. Restart.
3) Do all windows updates.
4) Do a full system defragment with MyDefrag overnight.
use MSE as antivirus

I use the same. Excellent anti-spyware app! Plus MSE for antivirus.
I keep all my important apps (meaning those I have installed) in a separate hard drive. My OS drive is only a SSD 80GB with OS + APPS installed. So, when I format and reinstall, I already have all the apps in one folder that I need to re-install. It takes about an hour or so to get new OS and apps back in. Games are stored on another drive as well and they usually still work fine and dont need to be re-installed.

Uninstalling JAVA is scorched earth bullshit anyway, many things use JAVA that aren't malicious, especially web gaming sites. Just don't allow JAVA to run on things you don't know what they are.

Again, I've never had any issue .. so I'm not sure what else you want me to say.

I'm not talking about you. I'm talkin about two apps in general. Few of us would have an issue regardless of an app because most of us know what we are doing anyway.
The actual difference comes when you try to clean infected systems.

Hmm, I guess so. It's been a while since I've had to clean off somebody's machine.

Thanks guys, this thread has been very helpful to clean my father's PC which contained at least 4 different trojans . There's still one left though, and it's incredibly bastard from what I've read..none of the anti-spyware programs seem to perfectly get rid of it. I guess the only option left is to save his documents and format everything

Formating is always a solid option. However if the system is infected then use few different tools to scan it. Not just one.
I suggest you to use:
1. Malwarebytes
2. GMER (rootkit scanner)
3. Kaspersky Killer (rootkit scanner)
4. You should also try Comodo's LiveCD and scan your system with it by booting straight from the disc. |
Thx, I've used Malwarebytes and KK with no good results (sadly the PC was already in a terrible condition when he let me check it). Will give a try to the other two

I find it odd that noone has recommended HijackThis... it is without a doubt the best program when it comes to destroying elusive files.
