So I bought Arkham City on Steam yesterday, because I still haven't played it, and it was on a 50% sale.

Now, my hardware should run this fine with the settings I'm using - 1080p, Extreme settings and tesselation set to Normal. Most benchmarks/reviews I've seen, they use High tesselation.

Now my FPS is always above 45, 55-60 most of the time (I guess it's frame limited to 62, since I'm never above it, even if im staring at a wall), but I think it happens when Im loading new areas, I get slowdowns - the FPS are still high (not always though, it has happened a couple of times that it has dropped to 10-20 for a sec or two), GPU usage is never above about 85% (mostly around the 70%-range) and the temps are good etc. Clocks are good (so it's not clicking itself down and up and so on). Does the game rely a lot on streamed data? Steam is installed on a 7200rpm 500Gb SATA-drive, but that should be enough, right?

I mean I enter a room, it slows down for a sec or two, then it's fine. I go back in to the previous room, no slow down. Back again into the room that caused the slowdown, and again its fine. When going around the city I get slowdowns here and there, but it's not in specific places..

Anyone have a clue as to what is wrong?

Yeah, the game is a poorly coded piece of shit that gives everybody problems .. both with framerate and general stuttering and lack of smoothness. There's nothing you can do.

Goddamnit Sad Oh well, it's not like it's unplayable in any way, its just not as smooth as you'd like it to be. Bah..

Aye, that's just it... not unplayable, just aggravatingly stuttery. You can alleviate that a lot by playing in DX9 mode, but it still stutters.

what? it's smooth as ass for me throughout
do you have physx set to high?
at least in AA the high setting really killed performance, so i played at medium though AC

+1
DX11 are still broken even after the patches (although some people seem to have less problems than others -for unknown reasons-). In DX9 it's very smooth but there's the typical UE3-related stuttering when loading new areas which can be annoying indeed..

Sounds exactly like hdd access (streaming) issue, which UE3 single player games rely heavily upon as you enter new locations. I also had these problems like you describe and they went away completely after upgrading to SSD.

It's random - example, you know when you get to the top of the tower where Joker has the remote-controlled sniper rifle? Happens just in the beginning of the game. When I entered that room, I got 10 FPS for like three seconds, then it was fine. Keep in mind though, it probably loads the entire city at that point, because you dive through the window without a cutscene shortly after that. But low FPS isn't always the case, I get slowdowns with 50-60 FPS too, like it's loading data and can't keep up, so it LOOKS like low FPS, but Fraps shows a constant number, more or less - when I get FPS-drops I can see the counter drop.

@Intel_NVIDIA:
I could try moving it to my SSD then, if it's possible to move an installed Steam game to another drive?

I'm not sure it is to be honest. I've tried and failed so far (but not googled it therefore there might be an answer).

I actually have the same issue as you. I installed today as I noticed the deal on Steam, everything is set to high settings and at times, normally during new areas, I get slowdown and juddering.

I'm running on an SSD over Sata 6GBs and it makes zero difference Sad
TBH, I'm not noticing it that much now and I'd prefer the game to look pretty than to run on dx9 Smile

couple of ways to do it. there's Steam Mover http://www.traynier.com/software/steammover
but I prefer DirLinker much more because it's less bloated and works with everything http://dirlinker.codeplex.com/releases/view/57839
or, you can just manually type in windows symlink commands from prompt, which both of these apps rely on, and they are just basically GUIs for these commands http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-symlinks-in-windows-vista/

Or you can copy steamapps folder, then delete everything else and reinstall steam on the other drive, move the steamapps folder there and you're done

... yeeaaaaaah, no.. lol. Symlinks are easier and faster Razz

i agree, but i don't think OP was complaining about overall fps, just slow downs due to new content stream from hdd when entering new area/room. this behavior is in both modes dx9 and 11.
