First of all, just because YOU personally don't feel the Soviet influences anymore doesn't mean that it's all in the past. The history is still there and if you don't want to take a look back, you have no future. I come from the country of 50 years of Soviet occupation, so I think I know what I'm talking about.
Also, you have no idea what or how much I've read, watched or played so saying to someone on the internet: "Get a grip!" or stop worshipping some unkwown journalist, is incredibly foolish and ignorant. You don't know me or what I'm thinking, so you have no right to judge or label me either.
And what makes you think those journalists claim to know everything? Where did they say that?
You also mention that you don't know or care if the reviewer is a good writer or not, but still you feel the right to disrespect him and make it seem like he's a total moron. Just because he has a different opinion? Another childish move.
And please, if you're all so smart, tell me what's your definition of a good "videogame analyst", I really like to know. |
The is strong with this one...

You are right and I don't judge you. I only judge your views on this specific matter. The matter related to someone that doesn't seem to know much about a certain subject, yet he poses into a very knowledgeable person.

You missed the point again. It's not a different opinion, it's a wrong and misinformed opinion. He lacks the skills to understand the game. Even more: he also seems lacks the skill/knowledge to understand European culture (cultural and social settings) and literature.
European sci-fi literature is at least as good as any other around the world. Especially the one related to folklore (strigga! - you should have a clue where does that comes from) and tradition. And yes, hell yea, you can find plenty of these in The Witcher 2. That's also why the game is so highly acclaimed in Europe. Because we relate more.
Also, as proof of his "knowledge", I can name the titbits about the potion crafting, the whining about "simplicity/complexity" and the meditation mechanism. He simply has no damn clue HOW to play the game, simple as that. Yet he claims he can post a verdict about it.

I am gonna give the definition of not only a good videogame analyst, but also of a very good journalist and game designer: Greg Kasavin. When I listen or read his reviews or interviews I can see an informed, pertinent and professional unbiased opinion. Also I see modesty. Something that your pal the writer lacks completely. He is a star, obviously.

I agree with the last part - although I didn't expect any names, Greg Kasavin is a pretty good example.
Other than that, we could probably argue forever and still getting nowhere.

This is actually one the most poignant reviews I've read about this game - exactly my thoughts and impressions. I also liked his description of Soviet system influencing videogame developers which is so true, especially this part: "The Soviet system obliged its citizens, even its finest citizens, to lie, cheat, and tolerate all manner of petty cruelties. In such a system ideas about video-game heroism do not long survive."
The Witcher's videogames are definitely overrated. People say the story is amazing. to me it's just a predictable, filthy mess. If you want a touching and captivating fantasy story, read Astrid Lindgren's "The Brothers Lionheart", for example. It's so much more deeper and moving than Witcher can ever be.
I also think that Geralt himself as a hero is incredibly boring, cold and uninteresting. Maybe it's the voice actor's tone which sounds cool and raspy just like Adam Jensen in Deus Ex 3, but it's soulless at the same time similar to Mass Effect's male Shepard.
The other stuff that he mentioned (different gameplay elements like the inventory, animations etc.) were also spot-on.
Great read, thank you. "Derpishness" my ass. |
So you like your reviewers to write an article after playing a 30+ hour game for six hours?

A well-made "space opera" would be quite welcomed from my side, but both a cyber-punk RPG and espionage action-RPG a-la AP would be the bomb.
