Uhm I think they announced that chars won't get deleted in D3. There will be no timelimit.

Great then I can play whenever I have time Smile
Also it looks like that D3Dark is not something that will get you banned.

Found it (they don't even delete them for D2 anymore, huh, interesting)

Deserves to be screenshoted:

Fuck Yeah

I won't be using it Razz ... but at least the justice was served. And some freedom of choice provided.

Have a beer Sabin! I was with you on that one!

Honestly, this is fantastic news and is definitely noteworthy. I'm glad we're given the choice now, rather than some arbitrary bullshit about "artistic vision" Hell, even my wife prefers the filter and she usually HATES stuff that compromises the original vision.

all round, me thinks.

What does he mean by "yet", though? Can DarkD3 be modified to become a speedhack or something? Or did he just add that word to be as vague as possible?

... well, to be honest, he kinda did change his opinion. Earlier today, when specifically asked about DarkD3;

"Using programs that alter graphics is against TOS"

Now, when further questioned about DarkD3 and the graphics filter;

"TOS against mods is for cheats. I agree DarkD3 is not a cheat and as long as it is not a cheat it, no ban is likely"

Re-wording? Perhaps .. though I'm going to go ahead and take it to mean exactly what it says, and that's DarkD3/filter is not a cheat and isn't against TOS.

People find all kinds of ingenious ways to perform their nefarious deeds, though I really don't think there's any way to cheat meaningfully in Diablo 3 by using a video filter. Had this have been a game where hiding and line-of-sight is key, such as an FPS or RTS, then yeah.. d3d9.dll could be made into a wallhack and the like. In Diablo 3 though, I just don't see what possible cheat application it could have. There's nothing kept out of sight, no fog of war, you can freely increase your resolution if you want (unlike D2 where you had to mod it and that wasn't allowed on open BNet) and even the enemies show up as red silhouettes when behind objects, so no hack needed there either.

Aye, that too ... though isn't Warden automated? How couldn't they act if Warden is going to take care of things automatically anyhow? Unless of course they add the filter to an exclusion list - at least until the day it becomes a viable cheat method :\

Basically what he's saying is that the current version of Dark3D won't get you banned, but since it can be upgraded to actually be a cheat, be careful and don't get a new "untested" version.

I think its just not worth it. First person to modify dark3d to do something that blizzard doesn't like, gets a bunch of other people banned because they can't distinguish who is using the modified version and the original. I think its an unneeded risk.

It's not an unneeded risk if Blizzard perform CRC or MD5 checking. The legit inject_FXAA tool from Assembla uses the same d3d9.dll all the time, all that changes is the shader settings. If Blizzard make sure to hash that file and only that file, then anything modified would fail the check and would be actionable.

MD5: 1F3673BA2031861357E06FBB9EF2035F
CRC: 67A01906

All the official D3D9.DLL files used in inject_FXAA are the same, from ixi's old Amalur settings from 2011.. right up to the same files used in FXAAToolHg6.zip released in March 2012.

See, I HAVE given this some thought and I'm not just blindly bashing others for no reason, or expecting Blizzard to allow people to hack and cheat their way through the game. A little forethought and the most minuscule of effort on their part would go a huge way to preventing abuse ... one that's more acceptable to people rather than blanket "No! Use it and we ban you because we can't tell which is a cheat file and which isn't!"
