PostPosted: Tue, 15th May 2012 06:22    Post subject: Small review :)
I'll sum up my thoughts after playing for about 5½ hours.

Information:
Playing alone (will do a co-op run in the coming days)
Class of choice Demon Hunter

First of - there is no doubt that this is Diablo, it's clickfest loot-pinãta, and a VERY good one at that. BUT it treads very little new ground where gameplay is concerned.

If you come here looking for massive innovation you will be dissapointed, but as others have pointed out - the polish is top notch, the gameplay is smooth, the skills responsive and powerfull, the loot dynamic, etc etc.

A few of my observations:

Graphics - while the character models may be a bit lacklustre (low poly count) the enviroments are nothing short of spectacular! They look awesome! True, the "paintery" look is not totally in the vein of D1/D2 - but wait until you get a bit further in it gets pretty narly.

Difficulty - For the most part I haven't had any trouble, in my 5½ hours I haven't died yet - but it has been close a few times, and I consider myself to be well above average in skill.
It's no where near as easy as the beta suggested - and I can see it becoming pretty hard in NM+

Length - I have played pretty casually, not trying to beeline, but if i have found the exit etc, I haven't backtracked. I have heard what some of the NPC's have to say, but not all of them. At 5½ hours, I'm closing in on the end of act II. This is NOT a 4 hour game! At a normal pace, for a first runtrough on normal, I would guess 9-10 hours.

Sound - the voiceovers are nice, the effects stellar, and the music is hit and miss - it's too orchestral for my taste, wtb more haunting and sparse instrumentation.

Crafting - seems like a waste in normal, I would instead suggest just disenchanting what you don't need, and spending your money on stash upgrades. And upgrade the smith when the cashflow picks up a bit.

Gameplay - The combat is nice, but so far one of my skills outshines the others by too large a margin - feels like it could use a bit more balancing. (at this point I've gotten 7 new skills that I'm not using simply because twin-chackram is SOOOO goood, may just be a DH issue).
Im a bit dissapointed in the bossfights so far, many of the them seem to follow a patters on doing their attacks, summon adds, and attack again. Even though they have had different mechanics they have seen a bit "samey", but I have only seen one Act boss so far, so might just be easing in to it.
And they seem to have made boss-fights into arena fights, you are in a locked room with the boss, it's you or him. for better or for worse, it seems this is they case with most of the major bosses so far. Not much of a problem on normal, but I can see it being the death of quite a few HC chars Razz

Story - It's okay, a bit uninspired sofar if you ask me (but I read a lot of fantasy, so this defeat the evil forces etc seems a bit generic - and the "hidden surprises" can be seen comming from a mile off)

review, great game. (will write more in 1-2 h, when i will get to work).
played for ~4 h, still in act I, i made the sword, and got to sleep.
i believe it will take me at least another 4 to finish in normal.

Only gripe i got with the game atm is the amount of possibilities and skill combinations. I simply can't decide whether to use X or Y or Z and i''m only in Act 1.

Looking at the future skills and additional runes i seriously can't imagine how i'm gonna decide on something and stick with it Sad

yeh, i was set for poison arrow+grasp of death.
30 minute later, NO, frogs + bats.
few minutes later, no, haunt + grasp.
got another rune, cool, it will be ... after level 10, i was changing build like a mad mad.
and the best part is that the majority of them worked nice. granted, every required different approach, but they were viable.

bullshit. it uses internet for server side game assets, not just a check if you are online or not. it's like a MMO, world of warcraft for example

@prudislav - I'm well aware of that - yes you can rush it, skip every cutscene etc, if you play the game even remotely as it is "meant" to be played, you will NOT finish it in 4 hours..

THB I could care less about what some elitist gamers are doing, with my playstyle I can see myself getting 10 hours out of normal difficulty - and there is alot to revisit, unique banter from other followers etc. - and again - im NOT a total completionist - in my 6½ hours of the two first acts I've left plenty of blank spots on the map.

At 6½ hours im done with act II - very cool bossfight, and I died a few times, the game is starting to show its teeth, and I couldn't be happier with it ATM. (except it keeps dropping mage loot on my DH :/ even a legendary).

yep it was a bit sarcastic if you didnt get it Very Happy Still thats why i will buy it in couple of years - just for now i dont get that hype
and for that online only thingy agree with some guy from RPS article:
Quote:
I think the willingness to put up with the server troubles and the always online DRM in general largely depends on your perspective on the Diablo games.
For a lot of people, it’s at its heart a multiplayer, cooperative game. For those, the exclusion of an offline mode is perhaps a bit annoying but not that big of a deal, because that wouldn’t be the game mode where they’d spend the most of their time anyway. For those who played the previous games mainly in single player and have little interest in online play, the DRM is understandably a stupid inconvinience at best and an absolute dealbreaker at worst.
So for now its a dealbreaker for me in this MSORPG statebut we wil see Wink But it will not stop me from playing it on friends account when he will be done with the game (he dont care about MP too but he has more stable connection and dont care about DRM)

for the 4 h gameplay, if i'm not mistaking, there is a 1h / act achievement. so is doable. probably safer to do it at 60 Smile.

Took us almost 7 hours to complete act 1 with 4 people. We explored every inch, killed every single mob, destroyed every single container. Doesn't get any more clear than this Razz
Retail is also singnificantly harder with 4 people than the beta was. We had also lots of pretty strong champions (charging bulls with jailing ability, that was hardcore) but not a single Legendary drop.
(Yes, we had lot's of short breaks obviously)

sabin or sin, can you confirm it if you play ? dont remember which one of you had that issue.
i use latest nvida beta drivers.

I have microstuttering here and there and a milisecond freeze when npc starts a conversation. But no screen tearing as it was in beta. But I'm playing on HD6850 with 12.3 drivers.
And the game is hard on my gpu. I don't know why but it speed up its fan pretty fast.

Course there's no more stuttering. They said it was an issue with caching sound assets in the beta that was fixed for retail Razz.

And now seriously... anyone saying this game isn't tons more complex than d1/d2 deserves to be punched in the face.

Pretty satisfied with boss battles too (at least the act 1 end boss was fun). Different abilities which you'll have to watch for on later difficulty levels i bet which most likely will 1 shot you or put you in trouble anyway. So it's not just mindless skill bashing.

Another thing that's really annoying though is the constant "should i keep this for rmah? might sell for a few bucks who knows" feeling you get on some rare items even if lowlvl. Damn.
