Had the same experience, and I still have no clue how the fuck they got hold of my CC details
Not with those sites, though and it was a couple of years ago

I doubt it, at least not physically. If that was the case it would probably be used on a brazilian website (or physical store even), and I'm always careful about the machines were I use the card.
I guess there's nothing I can do but wait for the new card and forget about this...

Don't you guys have some kinda pin or security code? Is the CC number all that is needed?

We have an additional security code and/or login step (depends on how you want it). I personally never understood the scurity code on the back of the card, weird kinda security.

I only have Vista Credit Card and when I buy online, it always connects me to their website to input my Social Security number linked to my name
Don't have that with MasterCard.

Well yeah, there's a pin code and a security chip for physical payments (i.e. at the local store), but for online stores you only type your name, the (16 digit) card number, expiration date and the cvc code garus mentioned... it's all on the card (or on the server after the payment).
Debit or banking cards always require a password/pin code, but not credit cards.
Edit: it's a mastercard.

https://www.entropay.com/, niggas
Set the amount you intend to spend + 2-3€/$ and use it right away... if shit happens you know that it had to be with entropay
Or go a step further: charge that entropay card with your own virtual card... a virtual card within a virtual card

That seems like a good solution but, alas, there's nothing like it here. |
Chipped cards, 3-d secure and alternatives are great solutions, but they can't work fully while there are sites / physical stores that don't accept modern security measures.
At such physical stores Chipped cards fallback to insecure magnetic scanners. Web stores that don't support 3-d secure and alternatives fallback to CVC/CVV codes and banks have whitelists for most known and popular to allow transaction to be completed without such codes.
As long as banks and card systems will be maintaining backward compatibility none of modern security measures will be effective.

Which is why I still prefer iDeal (Dutch debit card payment system, Germans have a similar system) over CCs. Without my PIN, which is not known to anyone but me, it's useless.
@ Mister_s: here you only need the CVV for CC payments as well and it's always on the back of the card.

I have an ABN CC, I always need to answer a security question. It was an option I had to enable though iirc.

Similar thing happened to me a few years ago. I paid for a month's subscription to ben-dover.co.uk because there was an epic porn that I couldn't find anywhere else.
A few days later I see £120 worth of T-Mobile top-ups charged to my card. I call the card company and they ask me to confirm my last few payments.
"Amazon.co.uk?" - yep
"Firebox?" - yep
"Ben Dover?" - yep
