dog-god wrote: | South Korea bans virtual item trading, Diablo 3 auction house dead
"South Korea has officially banned the trade of virtual items, which would make Diablo 3′s Auction House illegal in the country. Blizzard originally sent the game to the Korean rating board without the auction house enabled but it now looks like the RMAH will never launch in Korea.
According to reports, the government took the decision in a bid to prevent students from wasting their time. The law will be set in stone next month.
“The main purpose of the games is for entertainment and should be used for academic and other good purposes,” said South Korea’s secretary of The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kim Kap-Soo, adding that item farming for commercial gain is a “serious hindrance” to a “healthy gaming culture”.
Of course, the implementation of such a law means that Blizzard’s Diablo 3 Auction House has no chance of launch in the country.
A separate, but related, law has also been passed that bans the use of gold/item farming bots in online-enabled games. Players found using programs that “allow in-game characters to hunt and collect items without the need of a player controlling them” will be made illegal and blocked from internet access.
The punishment for breaking the law will be a 50 million won fine (£27,612) and a maximum jail sentence of five years.
According to the South Korean government, some 60 per cent of virtual items traded online are acquired through the use of bots which gives online games a “negative reputation”."

Are the Asia servers in Korea ? , if they are I assume that none playing on them even if not from Korea will be unable to use that service. |
Seems like the Germans and French want to see Blizzard punished aswell:

Those dont seem to be RMAH related though, Just people who fail to understand d3 is pretty much an MMO, and MMO's have crappy launches.

I find it funny that a government manage to sum up why people play games and a gaming company doesn't get it

Isn't that what governments do?
Sticking their nose in none of their business ?

Just wondering , in his particular case do you object to the government banning the RMAC and making the botting illegal.

I agree with zipfero actually... If students want to waste their time let them.. It's their own problem. They'll do it anyways (maybe less in Korea).. Why ban botting? It's not like it's allowed in most games anyway.

This might be the first good thing i've heard a government do in a long time. They set a stop to their corporate greed and i'm all for that. 5 years for botting was a bit over the line though.

Perhaps so. Well, the first few might get it harsh, but i doubt it will be 5 years as you said after that.

It's their business actually. If the students spend too much time in games they will prolly get worse grades and then it will be much harder for them to get a LEGAL job to contribute to the society and the country.

Of course it's their business. It's a pity that most governments have quit ruling and are more worried with votes and pleasing the greedy companies.

That Korean politician is spot on with his thinking. Going after profitable gaming is the right idea, but simply making it punishable by law, is only showing it back into illegal waters where it was before D3 and Blizzards attempt to legalize (and ofc monetize) sell of e-items. The core problem is in game design itself that makes those items needed and highly desirable. It counteracts whole 'fun' aspect of playing games. Story, art, gameplay, everything that should matter is replaced with a grind for better loot. Fixing that with governmental involvement is impossible, and I certainly don't see the solution for it, except maybe one that involves lobotomizing millions buying these games.

It's worthless, I'm sorry to say. Really.. don't waste your time. You can run around a few of the starting areas, killing a handful of zombies that don't fight back, getting thousands of gold and all the best loot from each kill. It's beyond dull and utterly broken.
