Someone's PC with Windows 7 gets a message from windows saying that the HDD has big problems and needs a security copy to be done..that means that at any time that HDD is going to die on him and BOOP,big fuck up
Today we're going to buy him a new, Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 7200RPM for him (SATA 3GB/s connector,but i guess the 6GB/s ' WD HDD is backwards compatible)
I was planning on giving format of his HDD and put stuff on it from MY PC to fasten things up (he needs it urgently),since his PC is...well...err...not for gaming (Core 2 Duo T#### Anyone?)
The question is:
1.If i unplug my SATA DVD Drive's cables and plug them into the new HDD,will it be recognized?..If so,can i just go to (Windows 7) Computer->Administrate->Hard Drives->Format #: drive ? (A quick format is ok?,also,no partitions,OS will be in the only HDD part)
2.Is there another way like,unplug my PC's HDD and connect the cables to the new HDD (keeping the DVD Drive's cables connected) then start a windows 7 installation and format that drive so it works or do i need the XP Disc?
Hope you guys can help me out ASAP,gonna get out of home in 2h15mins

What do you mean with "put stuff on it"? You don't need a fast PC to format a drive, just put it in his PC and install Windows as usual.

People on GOOGLE says that most of actual HDDs comes UNFORMATTED and needs to be formatted IN Windows to be recognized during Windows XP/7 installation progress..?..else they dont appear in the HDD list during XP/7 installation..
Hey,i've searched google first before asking here...
Also,in his PC it took'd us a TOTAL of 3 hours to just install Windows 7,Photoshop CS6,Office 2003/2007,Nvidia drivers and the friggin Windows Updates (yes,i have an activator etc)
In my PC it'd just take less than an hour...that's why i say it's URGENNNNNT

You can format the drive from the XP/7 installation menu of course. Formatting takes only a few seconds. Just do a quick format and all is well.
You can also just connect through the sata cables from your DVD and format it through Windows.
I really dont see what the problem is here. Formatting is a matter of seconds always.

The HDD will be detected, formatted or not. During install, prior to it to be more precise, you'lll get the option to format it.

OK then...i'm asking because whenever i had my own WD HDD (same model,just 1TB) it didnt appeard on first time on the installation's list...i think...

You probably had your BIOS settings on AHCI instead of IDE, which would require using SATA drivers before WinXP installation. With Win7 that should no longer be necessary.

It's set to IDE because..yea,i dont have the drivers for XP (guess Win 7 installed them in the process?)
Anyways,thanks for the help..will come back if something wrong happens..hopefully NOT
