This thread is all about coming up with excuses for things. It works like this:
Person A writes something that he needs an excuse to get out from, such as:
"I don't want to spend time with my parents tomorrow"
Person B then responds with an excuse (points for better, more creative excuses that WOULD WORK), such as:
"Tell them you ran into a really old friend who is in town for just 6 hours and you have to meet them before they leave for three years of studies abroad".
Please make sure that a previous request for an excuse is answered before making a new request.
OK, here's the thing I need an excuse out of:
I have this persistent mother that keeps calling on a nearly daily basis, every time she pretty much tells me the same things, but the call tend to last at least an hour, up to two hours. She's pretty fucking bored, and she's the second person in the world that I do not want to hurt. (First is my GF). So help a bro' out?
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

Block her number and then tell her you've been having some minor issues with the phone company. That's the short term fix, then a bit later you can tell her how they screwed you over somehow and as a matter of principle you won't be using a cell phone anymore until they sort it out. Which is never, of course.

Since this is a daily routine there are several things i d try. Find out why she is calling you? For example, is she feeling lonely, has control issues, is developing dementia etc. so you can work on long-term solutions / goals (like get her into more social contact with others, show her social web sites and similar) to make these calls less important. Second, try calling her yourself to change the pattern and gain control over the situation and maybe tell her from time to time that you do not have much time, so you can try to make gentle changes to the communication / turn-taking without hurting her and making her get used to the possibility of short calls or no calls at all. If you managed to reduce the frequency, try to tell her "excuses" like "i have to do soemthing important for work in my free time, so i dont have time for chats and need the time for myself, i ll make it up to you and will be there for you again in x days / x weeks".

Thanks for the advice Lutzi, she's been doing this for years and years, and she does it every time she's bored. Speaking every once in awhile is no problem for me, but it's obvious she does it because I'm some kind of distraction from her boredom. I've used some contacts to get her "a job" as a helper in a care center, but she didn't want to do it. She's not developing dementia, her health is actually pretty damn spot on. But she gets restless easily and calls people as soon as she's bored. It's funny how people can get old, but not take responsibility of their lives. :S
I got some good replies. NEXT.
