Hi. I'm having problems playing "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II: The Rise of the Witch-King" with my brother over my Wi-Fi LAN, and since we both (me the most) enjoy this game's structure with its leveling heroes and units, are there any other games with such features and that are playable over a real LAN?

Here's the thread with my LAN problem BTW: The Rise of the Witch-King LAN problems...

Star Wars Empire at War, as well as the earlier Galactic Battlegrounds. Both are great RTS on their own, which also happen to have full LAN support and Hero units (albeit temporary and you don't level them, iirc) You could also play the HoMM series, such as HoMM3 and HoMM5 (HoMM6 doesn't have LAN) as well as Dawn of War 2.

Star Wars: Empire at War (and the expansion Forces of Corruption) added to the list. As for Galactic Battlegrounds since Age of Empires II, has a lot of compatibility problems and they both share the same engine, I'll assume is has them too.

HoMM = TBS. Not really what I'm looking for.

Dawn of War 2 was the first game that popped in my mind, but if I recall correctly, it does not support LAN play. Sad

I never went down with SpellForce 2. No real idea why, but it just didn't clicked with me. Either way, it was added to the list (at the bottom Razz ).

DoW2 does support LAN, it's even playable "online" via Tunngle and Hamachi.

http://www.bfwgaming.com/wp/2009/03/dawn-of-war-2-over-hamachi/

PvP LAN has always been possible, but co-op requires Live iirc. You can even use the same Steam account to play PvP over LAN if you put Steam into offline mode and use a Live "offline" profile, as the game itself has its own "Custom Game > LAN" option.

As for HoMM, oops... yeah sorry, TBS Sad Shame as those games really do fit the bill. I don't know about compatibility of Galactic Battlegrounds either, admittedly it's been a good few years since my pals and I yucked it up with epic LAN sessions on that Very Happy (Fuck you Gungan Shield Generator, no seriously, fuck you!)

I had no idea. DoW2 added to the list then. Thank you.

King's Bounty = TBS.

As for SpellForce 2, a stand-alone expansion was released a few months ago I think, so maybe it received some kind of graphic and technical update?

Why play an RTS with hero units when you can play a TBS with hero units:

C2C is still a WIP mod but very playable already. Smile

Another game played to death. And yes, with the Caveman2Cosmos too. Razz Although I do prefer the vanilla over C2C for normal play, I love the expanded timeline. But it feels like it's one of those mods that adds things just for the sake of adding. For example: there are lot's of animals early on, and that fine, but being able to tame them? And on top of that, we can use them to make special buildings? It's just too much, and in my opinion it does not fit right.

I'm sure there are lots of people that loves the mod, but for me, as I already said, I prefer the vanilla or even the Revolutions mod. I guess I like mods that act more as a official expansion than a total-conversion. Oh, well. Razz

How about super-units? Those very expensive but very powerful kinda of super? I can think of Command & Conquer 3, and Supreme Commander 1 and 2. Are there more out there?

I tried Krater at launch, and besides running like crap at my end, it just didn't appealed to me and it's really not what I'm looking for - games with a skirmish mode, playable in LAN.

Dragonshard, and outside it's short comings and small issues, this is by far my favorite "RTS" ever.
