Did I miss something or did you leave out Zone Alarm?

it's the one I use, because I wanted a standalone one and it's free. Plus it was my first firewall and it seemed user-friendly enough.
Thinking of replacing it, though.

Edit: the WindowsXP one should also be in the poll, imo. Smile

Just reinstalled ZoneAlarm. I'm this close to banning it from my hard drive, as the bastard is blocking Battlefield 2, even though I've added BF2.exe to the list of trusted programmes. Damn legal freeware.

I use a router along with Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 2.5 - last time I checked, Outpost 2.5 was one of the few firewalls out there that was capable of passing all known firewall leak tests.

IMO.. It's simple, less memory usage and effective firewall..

It's simple. Use Mac or Linux for work (like I do) and Windows or console for gaming ONLY. I don't need no friggin' firewall for my Mac...

What is better? A *BSD/Unix/*nix box running which is itself a PC+OS+Ip Tables, or are you talking about some small firewall box which the software/os/whatever actually handles the traffic?

That's true only if you are the type of person who knows better than to open attachments from emails, click Yes to popups in IE, etc. And also assumes that you never let anyone else use your computer. I have a secondary business cleaning up spyware and viruses from people's machines and almost always the problem comes from young kids who love to click Yes/OK to installing junk like that.

Personally, I don't even use AV because I hate how bloated they have all made their memory resident scanners, but I also restrict my email usage to webmail and one email for my personal domain which still gets zero spam. In my situation, an IPCop firewall (running on a POS Pentium 200 w/64MB) is all that's necessary. That's not the kind of advice I give to people who need to pay me to fix their machines though.

I prefer IPCop. They branched off of SmoothWall 0.9 and have turned that into a product that is far superior to SW, and still free. I don't know of any other free or even cheap solution that gets you up to 4 interfaces (internet, intranet, wireless, DMZ). It's based off iptables, includes the bare minimum of services needed to run the firewall, ssh, and a web config tool, and is patched frequently. It's barely harder to install/configure than a Linksys router, too. Honestly the only thing it can't do which I'd like is to be able to bridge multiple net connections, and that's pretty unrealistic to ask of something that's free.

The only other firewall I'd consider is Devil-Linux, which is even a bit more secure than IPCop (no HD = no way to get rootkitted), but I'm pretty sure they only support two zones still.

Zone Alarm with Antivirus.. Works great for me and gives me no trouble at all.

I use a Firewall as I don't want to use Service Pack 2 and without it I get some shitty "bla bla bla 60secs countdown" (yes I now I can stop it but I prefer to not have it at all).

Went to ZAV after I've been using Panda for a while, but that firewall made all my games lag... Sad
