You don't need updates for 3.55 games (and below) but anything above 3.56 requires a retail update. Same applies to *most* PSN titles, though I believe you'll run into some that require debug files.

Are there any "big" name games that currently do NOT work on DEX machines?
Mostly I was aiming for Resistance 3 (which I've heard works) and Uncharted 3. Although I'm aware that Uncharted 3 works on 3.55 with a bit of tinkering, I couldn't get the damn thing to work.
What about Journey on DEX?
Is the requirement for an update some sort of flaw that gets things to run on a DEX machine? Some strange security hole/glitch?

Journey Demo will work on DEX, as long as you got the link off the PS Store, download the pkg and install it through USB via install pkg. The full version won't work though since you can't log in the PSN and thus activate your PS3 with this CEX2DEX method.
Yes Uncharted 3 will work fine with the latest update without any tinkering. Some games with retail updates will fail anyway (Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City, Portal 2... for example) because most games with SPRX files dont have them included in the update.

The amount of screaming people are doing for Resistance 3... it's definitely in SOMEONE's best interest to release it! It would certainly go a long way to easing some of the distaste towards the dongles.

convert to dex -> play resistance 3...that easy.
Heavy Rain and Uncharted 3 also working perfectly. Always had problems with Heavy Rain on 3.55 CEX.

Interesting hopefully this hacking technique will get out, with the private keys the consoles would be like pc
any code will run without any kind of hardware mod straight from usb.

So, I´m not following the PS3 scene for some time and have some questions.
What is the limit of firmware version to downgrade/hack/USB pen/whatever the console must have?
What are the best options in terms of hacked firmware.
I sold mine some time ago on 3.55 firmware, and all the new games were blocked.

At stock it must be 3.55 or below , its still the same ppl are still on 3.55

Step by Step Guide to CEX>DEX Your PS3
1. Your internal HDD will be formatted, so you'll lose whatever is on there. Backup what you want to keep.
2. If you stay on 3.55 and use a modded DEX FW then you can continue to use INT/EXT drivers with MultiMAN just fine. Though there is absolutely ZERO reason to stay on 3.55-DEX because it offers nothing of substance over 3.55-CEX.
3. If you go to 4.xx then you can't use the INT drive for full games any longer, only PSN titles. Your games must be ran from EXT and only 4 at a time, which require installing and changing via your PC and specific PS3 tools.
4. Your 3.55 titles will continue to work just fine. Any games higher than 3.55 require updates before they'll work.

What files? You can play the game just fine on 4.x DEX, you just need to update the game as it's a 3.56+ title and won't work without NPDRM updates. If you mean why haven't they released a 3.55 fix... money. It's one of the games being sold on pirated BD so egh.. I guess they either don't care, or would rather keep their income flowing.

I'm not as clued up on the PS3 scene as I am the 360. But every other time I view this thread, someone is always asking about Resistance etc..
I always just wondered why this was such the elusive title (without dex'ing your console).

Because it was never released for 3.55, other than TrueBlue specifically pressed BD media. There's no hacked EBOOT for it, not even with a TrueBlue device, you had to buy the dongle *and* a pirated copy of the game.
