Had a netgear el cheepo router given by comcast. The thing would drop DNS service everytime I would DL large files or youtube vids. Lightning struck the house and killed it. So we got another one, and is funny because the tech had to try 3 he had to find one that would even power on. Well as expected the performance drops greatly the further you get from it, but at least the connection was stable.Fast forward a month. Signal drops to 1 bar,
massive ping fluxes in gaming, and getting an error saying that both PCs are having the same ip addy. So I go to reset the router, and no internet at all. Dns error. I could log in to the router and discover that no ip was auto given after reboot. I renewed and all the ri8ght numbers came up and it worked. I rebooted the router again just to see if it was a glitch, but same thing. had to manually renew IP to get net connection. This router just a shit pile? or something else maybe? The main problem is that im a power user and furthest from the router
the other pc is wireless also, but is only used for facebook, and its 5 times faster on speed test and never showes problems. But its in the same room, I got a kitched and my bdr wall between. SO, everytime I try to address these problems I get major shit from the other user, cause she pays the bill. It works fine for me!!! Im sick of this shit im just going to get it shut off!! You talked me into getting this 24Meg cable over the 3 meg DSL, and theres nothing but problems!!! etc etc

Went to wally world and bout a new router. Brought it home and it wont connect with the modem! So while on the phone with the router people I plug the ethernet cord directly into a laptop, and no internet! So no connection with the new router or directly. I plug the old netgear router back in and it worked! So I go to the ISP and after hard reboots from both ends, nothing will work except the old router. The guy said he has never seen this before, and he had a pow wow with the other techs and no one knows why this is happening. So im back with the old router for a few days till they come and replace the modem. At least ive got
net till then. Just no D/Ls or gaming till then. Has anyone here heard of this?

Well i'm sure that when you replaced the router and plugged it in you either made a mistake when installing it or there is something wrong with the new router you bought or the modem or perhaps the cable you used to connect the two.

Anyways don't get a cheapo router they suck and will lead to problems. Personally i had issues with D-link routers and netgear routers. I switched to ZyXels main model (well one of their best ones for home use) and i have not experienced any issues what so ever since then. Before i had issues with my internet connection dropping every now and then but that was only due to the fact that my previous routers could not handle my connection (i have 100/100 oc).

In my experience though the usual thing is that there is a simple mistake made some step of the way. For instance you can sometimes have issues if you only get one ip from your isp and you try to switch router before releasing the ip on your old one.

I had something similar and it had nothing to do with hardware. My connection was very unstable and my friend (who works for my ISP) fixed this by slowing down my connection from 6Mbit to 5,5Mbit. He said that it's possible that they're too many people on my street with internet are hooked up on the same cable/line or something because the ISPs are cheap bastards.

It is fixed! The tech guy came and found the same problem. The modem would only connect with the old router. Nothing else. I do note that the link light was amber instead of green. This was also the first time he had ever seen anything like it. It just defies logic! Replaced the modem and it works great now! Getting 5 ghz in the back room now and dl speeds have 3X
