I don't think they're desperate, I think they're trying to get attention to their own gaming platform. As far as I know, Driver:SF and From Dust sold really well, there was no reason to offer them for $1 aside from either bringing the attention to Uplay or a quick cash grab, or maybe both.
Valve has huge sales not only because they can afford to (and don't forget that individual publishers okay the sales) but also because it fosters good feeling towards the platform. Ubisoft looks like they're doing it simply because they're desperate.
£1 for their games? Really? And you don't think this smacks of desperation?
They obviously want to position uplay as a storefront next to origin and steam, 1 dollar games are great way to get some interest. I dont think its desperation, its more like a planned markting move. (But yes, I also despise ubishit)
*shrug* However you like. I'm not interested and I have no intention of using their store or buying their games (though Driver:SF for £1 is a great deal) and to me it just smacks of desperation, or pure lunacy if they think they'll ever compete with Steam.
That's what everyone said about Origin too. Now wiki tells me, "As of February 2012, Origin has been installed by 9.3 million users." /sadface
Sure, that's no surprise... I'm willing to bet it has a lot to do with EA locking certain games to Origin only, thereby forcing people into using Origin whether they want to or not.
~edit~
Ninja'd You have games that require Origin, enormously popular games like Battlefield and Mass Effect, as well as people joining out of curiosity or during recent cheap sales. Hell.. *I'VE* got Origin installed since it was the only way to play my Amalur

But then again, the 40 million userbase of Steam could be because of Steam exclusivity for games like HL2, DXHR, Alan Wake, Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Portal, and 80% of the most successful games in the recent years.

But don't you agree that this can only be good for gamers? More games that cost almost nothing?
If it blows up in their faces and Steam mops the floor with them, who cares really?
In the meantime we get more games really cheap.
It's all upside for us
And you use that knowledge... why.. exactly? You basically just listed one of the reasons why Steam is so popular and used it as a reason as to why uPlay would be popular?
@vaifan
Like I said; I'm not interested. I already have Steam, Desura, Capsule and I'm forced to use Origin, I'm not adding even more clients to my already-expansive collection... least of all fucking UBISOFT of all companies! Some people round here have very, very short memories it seems.
Yea, and steam was mandatory for HL2 iirc. Now ubi just needs to release exclusive "killerapps" like Ass Creed or w/e and you just watch how people flock to their service.
All that shit is equally bad. Only piracy is the solution.
And limiting their sales on PC to 10 copies No way Ubisoft will discard Steam, EA could do that because they had EA Download Manager before and it was known, no one would be willing to go Uplay exclusive.
Besides, there is a store page for AC3 on Steam.

So I bought a game. Been waiting for an hour now for it to appear in my Uplay games list. Is it there? Nope. Do I have a receipt in my email? Nope. Did I pay ( thankfully only 1 dollar). Yep.
Sin317-"im 31 years old and still surprised at how much shit comes out of my ass actually ..."
SteamDRM-"Call of Duty is the symbol of the true perfection in every aspect. Call of Duty games are like Mozart's/Beethoven's symphonies"
deadpoetic-"are you new to the cyberspace?"
Well, thankfully I saved my order id and cd key, so I can contact tech support.
Of course I have no idea who I should contact, payments are not covered by UBI but by a third party.
Oh, and seems I'm not the only one.
Meh... Ubi can't even do the sales properly. AC Revelations is 10€ right now... and the Lost Archive DLC for it is 9.99€.
Also, you simply can't find any of the additional content in the Uplay store, you have to go to the regular Ubi Shop. They should at least make this thing a bit more organised, right now it's a total mess
As for having yet another client for buying games... In my case, Uplay is already installed anyway, since AC2 and AC:Revelations uses it. So if they actually have a good deal on something, it's a non-issue to buy from them for me.
Great. I had to download the game from piratebay as it's gone from private trackers, it was FINALLY recognised by Uplay. Used my CD Key fron order summary page, which I thankfully saved ( because they still didn't send my an email containing it) and the tech support just gave me a standard formula response and didn't even change Ubi game launcher to UPLAY ).
Even Steam had a better launch, that was goddamned 9 years ago and they started from scratch.

Ubishit never disappoints
