take TF2 for example, you get the same character shadow no matter where you are, inside, outside, on a roof, in a cellar, under water and whatnot. that's hardy a "dynamic" shadow.
Ok lemme rephrase that for the simple mind.
All source engine games CAN have multiple lightsources with dynamic shadows from them.
yeah so what, most engine tech demos look amazing, but end result in games usually isn't that great...
Don't twist this discussion into something else.
"has any game ever handled dynamic shadows from multiple light sources beyond a few?"
This was what it was about, not techdemo vs real.

Tried clean installing "DLC Repack" release, game still refuses to start. I'm now 3 releases down. Don't know if it's a crack issue or if the legit game would also refuse to work, but no Sleeping Dogs for me for now.
Try this:
1) Grab the steam unlocked release (the ali213 one)
2) Grab the High Res Textures (again from ali213)
3) Copy the High Res Textures into main folder of the unlocked release
4) Download the 35mb exe release from ali213 and copy it inside the main Sleeping Dogs folder
5) Run the above mentioned exe and wait 3 minutes. It will update your game and crack it for you
6) You are now ready to run the game executable. This way your game will work 100%.
The XDelta patcher doesn't crack the game AFAIK. I tried the steam unlocked release, applied the XDelta patch, tried 4 "different" cracks, none worked. All the same white window popping up for a second and closing.

Just follow step 4.You need the merged ali213 XDelta Patch/Crack exe.
You can even apply the 95mb update release first and then the 35mb exe release.Had the same problem as you and it worked the way I described.
No idea where to get the Ali213 patch/crack release, and the 3DM 1.4 crack definitely doesn't work either.
I give up. Either the game doesn't like something in my configuration (and the lack of any error isn't helping me), or I have to wait for a "better"/different release to show up at my tracker.

I should clarify that the "few" in my original question referred to light sources, not games (it was poorly worded). I acknowledge that there are games that render dynamic shadows from multiple light sources, my point was that none of them come anywhere close to representing anything like a real world situation (which may comprise hundreds of light sources), which is what would be required to "do night shadows properly". That is what I was what I was trying to get at.
I've tried finding the file fearwhatnow mentioned (35mb ali213 release), can't find it on private or public trackers. Only things I find are either 3DM cracks, or cracks that mention no source. Some of them have a "SKIDROWGAMES.COM" file coming along, some others "www.3dmgame.com".
I'm getting NO errors whatsoever. Whatever I've tried always ends up in the game window popping up for a moment (just a white background, nothing else), and after a second it closes with no error whatsoever, no minidump, nothing. Process Monitor says the process exit code is 0, as if the game is closing itself normally. And I couldn't find any errors in the Process Monitor logs for HKShip.exe, like a missing DLL.
I've tried reinstalling DirectX as well, both the one that comes with the game, as well as downloading the latest installer from Microsoft. It either tells me I have a newer version installed, or the files it installs don't make any difference.
EDIT: Even releases that should work perfectly out-of-the-box like the pre-patched pre-cracked Vansik repack don't work here. Same problem with the white window popping up for a sec and closing. Pretty sure there's something fucked up in my configuration, but it's a near-clean install of Windows 7 that's two weeks old or so, and I haven't encountered any other issues with any games.

If the shadow moves in relation to a light source at all then it's a dynamic shadow. A good example of a static shadow would be the old "blob" shadows that were just a dark circle under a model's feet.
Did anyone manage to pick lock the door on mission? The mouse isn't working while we're trying to pick lock...
Worked perfectly with the controller
Still, shoddy work in that regard and unexcusable (as is it with Darksiders, Prototype 2 and will be with Dark Souls"). But nothing new in the age "Multiplatform all the things!".
Can't complain that much anyway. Took me 15 hours to finish it (did all the missions except for the "repetitive consolitis stuff")
Found a very stupid bug. I'm using the steam version, which i bought.
When you access the graphic menu, and press Q to open the advanced graphic settings, change them and save the configuration, the game won't actually save them. If you re-enter that menu again, you'll notice the options are set back to the standard configuration.
This is pretty annoying, considering the fact that i needed the set lower graphics to improve my fps, and now i can't because of this bug.
Anyone get it too?

Hm I got the P2p version which is supposdely with all the DLC, but when I click the Downloadable Content tab in the main menu I only see the Just Cause pack installed. (probably because I have JC2 installed)

They fixed that in 1.4, so either you didn't update or you are not running legit afterall?

It did that for me too with 1.4 and I bought the game before the crack was out. Fixed in 1.4 my ass. Same for Sabin. Had to do the changes via the .xml
PS: The client I downloaded was already 1.4 , before someone asks.

I am, apparently the latest patch on steam is 1.3
Got it two days ago and Steam downloaded the full 1.4 client (which still showed this behaviour).
The solution is to save the first time it prompts you to do so while ignoring (choosing 'no') the second time that window pops up when exiting the display menu.
Where is the DLC installed? I checked the folders and cant find any small files that could be the dlc. I really want to have that Triad enforcer pack.
Or is it normal for that cracked version to not show the dlc in the main menu?
Could someone running 1920x1080x60 post the following lines from their DisplaySettings.xml in Data folder:
<RefreshRateNumerator>211440000</RefreshRateNumerator>
<RefreshRateDenominator>2936608</RefreshRateDenominator>
My montor is 60hz but the only option for me is 72hz.
