There's very little info yet, but it looks like a SoC portable NeoGeo. It's far too small to have any real Neo hardware, so it's most likely emulation.

It should IMO fit real neo hardware. I own a AES and a MVS and there boards are not that big, and with new PCB tech you could probably fit the neo hardware into something even smaller. Sure the Games will be roms. But who knows its probably all emulation, for price savings. As a huge Neo Fanboy i will be getting this.
Its funny how the article says it ships with English versions of the games. Every Neo Geo game has all languages, and your hardware determines if you see English, red blood, boob bounce etc. All AES and MVS carts had all the features including languages on every one.

The internal hardware was gigantic, though obviously not to the size of most standard JAMMA boards (my Robocop 2 board still haunts my nightmares even today ) and it would take a lot of redesigning to fit in a handheld machine, if you ask me. I still think it's going to be emulation - even the new Sega handhelds are emulation, it just ends up being cheaper for the manufacturer. What I want to know is why there are Neo handhelds and Sega handhelds, but no SNES!! What the hell, Nintendo? Pull your thumb out already.
I'm sick of homebrew SNES emulation. It's so damned buggy on handhelds - SNES4iPhone and the like are god damned hideous. I'd love to be able to play on the move, especially taking advantage of the hardware in the iPad 2, but the current SNES emulators are laughable :\ |
Your probably right. It just seems looking at the boards that there is a lot of unused space. And the MVS board i have for my consolised project is half the size.
I have my AES modded with component out and stereo sound mods. Its amazing. Still own about 20 AES Carts, mostly common, but some very rare and expensive carts.
I have a mint Garou and samurai Showdown 4. I have Metal slug 1, but is a conversion.

Oh man, I envy you most extremely. I REALLY miss my AES - it really was my pride and joy, only had five games (Super Sidekicks, Samurai Shodown, Art of Fighting, King of Fighters 94 and some sidescrolling shooter I always forget the name of) but I played that thing every single day, my elder brother and I loving the hell out of it.
Good times, good times.

Man. Reading this thread is making me punch myself hard for selling my Neo Geo Gold System for in-store credit back in the day. I should've kept it.
Back when it came out it was the 2nd most expensive home gaming console. My gold went for $650 with games that were $200 a piece and you could easily finish in one setting because of unlimited continues.
The Panasonic 3DO is the one that beat the Neo Geo in console price. It was $700
I have the Neo Geo Emulator running on my xbox but some of it is not the same as having actual hardware. Like playing Goldeneye on anything but an N64.

sabin1981 wrote: | I didn't buy mine brand new (they were around £500 in the UK at launch... seriously Panasonic, fuck you) but a couple years later. I remember loving the machine, but it only had a handful of titles even worth playing - games like Gex, Return Fire, Need for Speed and the only purely arcade equivalent home version of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. In fact, if memory serves, at the time it was the ONLY home version of SSF2T but yeah, it was almost arcade perfect with full animation and even had CD audio.
The rest of the games were filler and mostly shit filler at that |
I have SSF2T, but no box. Only disk and manual.

Here's an update on this... and I don't think many are going to like it
http://kotaku.com/5934106/the-neo-geo-returns-this-december-for-200
Quote: |
Remember in January how everyone got a little excited about the official return of the Neo Geo brand, via a new handheld system called the NEOGEO X GOLD? Yeah, well, it might be time to get a little less excited.
Because the thing costs $200.
That's right. For a small handheld that plays a bunch of games that are 15-20 years old, you'll be paying almost as much as you would a modern system from the likes of Sony or Nintendo.
I mean, sure, it comes with a bunch of pre-installed games (see below), a rather fetching replica arcade joystick and a docking station (that doubles as a video out station), but still, $200? They're crazy.
Confirming specs first listed earlier this year, the NEOGEO X GOLD handheld itself will boast a 4.3" LCD screen, a headphone jack and an "expandable game card slot".
The pre-installed games on the handheld are:
3 COUNT BOUT
LEAGUE BOWLING
ART OF FIGHTING II
MAGICIAN LORD
ALPHA MISSION II
METAL SLUG
BASEBALL STARS II
MUTATION NATION
CYBER LIP
NAM 1975
FATAL FURY
PUZZLED
FATAL FURY SPECIAL
REAL BOUT - FATAL FURY SPECIAL
THE KING OF FIGHTERS '95
SAMURAI SHODOWN II
KING OF THE MONSTERS
SUPER SIDEKICKS
LAST RESORT
WORLD HEROES PERFECT
It'll be out worldwide on December 6.
|
$200 for a handheld that has far less functionality than Dingoo, which already does everything this NeoGeo X does .. with the only exception of the "classic style" joystick. One of them. Which isn't even the proper size, if the above photo is to scale.
God damn it... what a waste

And you'll get a phone with it too, yep. Or you could buy a Dingoo or a GP2x or any other "emulation" handheld and STILL get the better deal. I can't believe SNK/PlayMore would charge so much for this.

I have a GP2X and both that and Dingoo are irrelevant now days now that Pandora has been released

It's most definitely emulated.

While I love the Pandora (and I really do) I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you and your comment about GP2x/Dingoo being irrelevant. They're very much relevant when you consider their competitor, the Pandora, is €400. I lost all interest in the Pandora once they announced the price.
Dingoo/GP2x = One hundred Euro, or thereabouts.
Pandora = FOUR hundred Euro.

Point well taken. I actually didn't realize the price until I looked closer at it. I thought that was just some special edition price or something O__O
Sucks though cause I have the GP2X Wiz and it appeared the community for it died off. We were suposed to have all these cool gadgets like TV out and shit which all got thrown out the window and the new GP2X was released. I kind of wanna start playing with it again now Been a couple years.
Also just found this:
Quote: | GPH, formerly known as GamePark Holdings,[1] was a South Korean company responsible for creating the GP2X that was founded by former employees of the game maker GamePark in 2005. but went out of business with no documentation. this was believed to happen around April, 2012.

I'm not surprised mate, this is GPH remember. The put out one device, then a year later utterly abandon it for a "better" one, rinse repeat. What's the new one? Caanoo or something? Now with GPH out of business, that device is now also obsolete. Now all that's left is the Dingoo/Pandora and the many, many, many Chinese/Korean Android-based knock offs... like the JX.D S5100 or Yinlips YDPGxx series.
Hell, you've even got another one from JX.D (who seem to have the corner on Android handheld gaming machnies) -- it's the S601 and it packs a wallop considering it's less than $70. That thing will chew up NeoGeo titles no sweat... for $130+ cheaper than SNK/PlayMore's own emulation handheld. Sad times.

More updates on the NeoGeo X. The handheld itself is $129 and is a "System on a Chip" device, with 20 emulated games built in and an SD slot for more. This still puts it as a more expensive, but less comprehensive, competitor to other emulation handhelds like the Dingoo or GP2x. It's $199 if you want the TV-out docking station and replica NeoGeo joystick - though admittedly they claim it does have genuine arcade parts just like the original Neo Geo Stick.

that case its easier and cheaper to connect your htpc or laptop with hdmi to your flat screen tv and use MAME on it, or just play the game on your PC.
cant see one playing those fighting games on a handheld or a normal controller even.
