1. Hackers are a real issue, the engine is simply too easy to exploit. It is open like a Microsoft OS without firewalls or anti-malwares. This will however be fixed in standalone.
2. "Pointless PvP" is a part of the game, whether you like it or not. It is a part of the risks and dangers of living in a post-apocalyptic scenario where there are no codes of morality or police, or anything other to rely on other than yourself and your friends.
3. This is a survival game at the core, it is meant to be very limited and niche. The ever present danger is a part of the intended game design. With that said, it is quite easy to find low-pop servers where you can play. And there are towns where there almost never are people. So I think the fault in this instance lies with the players, not the game.
The game is as casual as you make it. If you want to reach some sort of "end game" you have to play it hardcore. If you want to play it casual you can just run into town, get a basic weapon - kill zombies, players, or do what you want.
the funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

me and my friend where east of novy sobor, suddenly we got a chat message in russion, 30 sec later we heard a voice that told us to get down or die. my friend died and the person who shot got kicked 5 sec later. I did run away, but his friend got me. Must me hackers.
I guess people got chased off by hackers and other idiots ruining the game
The idea of this mod/game are great. But people tend to become idiots and assholes on the net, and games like this always drags out the worst possible in players. This is why a game like this nearly always gets ruined, normal people stops playing and what's left are the idiots.

Its not realistic though, in real life you would kill for safety or for what they are holding.

Your complaint about a mod which has zombies in it is that player killing "for fun" is not realistic?

They should stop updating the mod imho. Those changelogs are ridiculous. I wish they would focus on the standalone. That's just my opinion but I'm aware that this is a hot topic and people raged enough when they announced the standalone. Personally, I wouldn't give a fuck about them

Nice way to treat your community, right there.
It's just that the mod can't be fixed/saved anyway and that's why it's a waste of time in my opinion.
well, i have to disagree. i think that DayZ is one of those games that you make your own fun. nothing has changed since may, when gamers were literally pouring into the mod. its just that people reached the limits of the current build of the game. this doesn't mean people can't still have fun.
last night me and a friend of mine spawned near the factory between Orlovetz and Polana (its where we last logged out) and 30 seconds later we heard a truck coming our way. the truck entered the factory and the players went inside to loot the building. me and my friend were wandering if we should snipe them and then take the truck, or just risk and try to steal it. well he stayed on the field and i went in and took the truck while hey were still looting the place.
boy, were they mad . they were shooting the truck, they even managed to wound me, but the truck was ours, and i felt that a little "suckers" in the side chat was appropriate. that made them even angrier.
all i'm saying is that the game needs even MORE pvp gameplay, imo. if you want this game to be about zombies and people cooperating in order to survive around the zombies - make the zombies harder and increase their numbers.
You totally missed the point of what I'm saying. The mod version will or (more likely) is stuck from a technical point of view because of all the limitations. The limitations it suffers because it is a mod for ArmA2. Rocket openly said that he's fully aware that there just isn't enough content, not enough possibilities and not enough motivationals. They can't do alot of stuff because it would require to change the main game it's based on and that's quite frankly a bit too much to ask. It would break other ArmA2 related stuff. Hell, it could even break the main game totally, the singleplayer, the addons.. everything.
Ontop of all that come the cheaters/hackers/exploiters. And you actually can't even call most of them cheaters. ArmA2 is build in a way that you can execute stuff very easily. It's an Simulation after all. It does what you want it to do. That's why it's so easy to hack/script in it.
I envy you, I really do. Because I'm past the point you're at for a long time. All you're experiencing and will experience in this mod, I already have experienced tenfold. Because I played the fuck out of it since May.
All this should change with the standalone if they do it right. Because with the standalone they'll have full control and can do as they please with the engine/code.
Just take your time and think a little ahead and about what I just told you. There is too much potential in this imho to waste any more time with the mod version. And all of us want a better game in the end, right?
(Btw, in no way I try to offend you or something. Just trying to explain the facts and why I think they way I do and said what I've said in the previous posts.)
I think most have stopped playing because the 'newness' factor has worn off. It's a brilliant idea, but the execution is so lacking. Standalone or not the game has serious issues. Mostly with hacking.
the reason I stopped playing is the shit updates that ruined the experince. graphical glitches weren't fixed forever, then when they are fixed, you have the dumb bug with going back and forth between bandit skin all the time, and losing backpack and items with it.
the last good period for me was from around 1.6ish to 1.7.2.3 after that it took a nose dive cause of the standalone and the hackers. + the game has so many easy abuses that together with youtube/forums and clans just turned it into an exploit meta game conflict.
there is still good time to be had for newcomers though. the thrill of early exploration and character build up is unmatched by any game.
but once you get proficient at surviving you either have to exploit/cheat, or take it up the ass from those that do.
newness, yea, but also the popularity
it's now impossible to play like you could early in the summer with all the pure pvp assholes who just kill everyone
i got killed twice today unarmed
yesterday i tried the fallujah map and within a few minutes a hummer with mounted machinegun came and blew me away, and i had only a makarov
(also, fallujah is the worst possible map imaginable for dayz.. what were they thinking?)
i think one worthwhile experiment would be to read first player log-in time from the hive (if it exists) and players 'younger' than a certain time couldn't join some servers
is this playable atm? left off at 171 or something. Wish we could play the gamescom build, or as that been released now?
Don't know, don't care. Didn't play for ages now. Last time I played was the patch where they said they fixed the artifacts but in reality didn't. Don't even know the version anymore.
I'm still playing, but I left the ridiculous public hive. Instead I'm playing on a private hive with no duping, no combat logging, and no hacking (at least not yet). There are a lot of features on the private hive that I wanted for DayZ but Rocket would just not add (either because of being slow, or because he would only implement it into the standalone).
If you want to try DayZ out like it was meant to be, check zombies.nu out. The difference is enormous, you'll find out. For example, at least a third of the server population AREN'T running around with ghillies and L85's and AS50's because they can dupe. Instead most people you run into have AK's or Lee Enfields. If someone logs off during combat his character stays in game for 30 seconds (cowards die regardless), etc, etc.
