i can see pros and cons of both display types so I must be someone who i never heard before. where do you come up with this stuff Laughing

i work with Dell IPS monitor every day. it's amazing for graphical work (far from perfect, has some uniformity issues), but very lacking in dark environment for entertainment.

sigh, it's really annoying how one sided this forum always gets.

Good choice KC Smile

With that budget of yours I don't think there's better, certainly not anything with TN. Did you also grab yourself an HDMI/DVI -> DP converter? Or check if there's one in the box with it (most reviews list package contents as well)?

its not in the box i think. the u2312hm have vga, dvi and dp. I will only use vga for 360 and dvi for pc for now.

But its a good idea to get hdmi/dvi to dp converter. How does that look?

Like that Smile

Make sure to get the right one though; male DP, female HDMI. If you see anything "ACTIVE" in the name, that's the wrong one (that's from DP output to HDMI input). I just picked the first one in the list here, I'm sure there are cheaper ones. They'll be slightly more expensive than HDMI -> DVI though, because it needs to lower voltages for DP Smile

Nice purchase.. welcome to the IPS club Smile
There is definitely no reason to consider TN displays over IPS if you can afford one. The prices aren't what they used to be (where you had to shell out a fortune for a decent IPS monitor) and ghosting/input lag issues are blown out of proportion: a 2ms TN monitor with a 8ms IPS side by side... I struggle to see any difference in blurring/ghosting and the likes, and IPS only keeps getting better at that. The difference in picture quality is immediately noticeable though, even right out of the box.

I only have one grudge with IPS-es - I wish they could get black levels comparable to VA based panels. Even the fancier IPS monitors seem a bit on the bright side when it comes to blacks. Might seem like a small issue for some, but really bothers me! Very Happy

I wonder if there are any good VA monitors out there suitable for gaming with a reasonable price. There's the FS2331, but it's a couple years old now, I think...

I'm still surprised and disappointed that these blacklevels are considered a small issue. And i'm not even talking about ISP panels. I have yet to see one good black level measurement on any LCD monitor (yet?).

Does no one play in a dark or at least darkened environment?

Sorry for the rant. It is actually pissing me off a little Razz

Eizo's FS2331:
http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1288694516
says 0.04 cd/m2 for blacks after calibration, which is really good.

My TV (according to the review from FPHD) has this value at 0.03 and in comparison to my U2311H (which is reported to be at 0.16, I think) it might as well be pitch black. I am not sure it's possible to best this on an LCD without local dimming.
So looking at that, monitors with great black levels exist, but not with IPS panels.

(Sorry for going slightly off-topic, by the way Smile)

@ KC: not sure, I know I wouldn't be able to get that much for it here in NL; second hand monitors, especially TN, are worthless.

@ Sniffty: not doable without local dimming like you said Smile

@ MinderMast
Thanks for trying Smile.
Problem is, I don't think 0.04cd/m² is any good (2009 Panasonic Plasma manages that). Try a current Panasonic (ST50, or GT50 VT50 in THX mode) if you can, to see what I mean. Those start at 0.01cd/² and with some hundred hours it drops to 0.005cd/m². I've seen the 0.01cd/m² and that is really amazing with many images (even anime gets amazing depth to its picture), but even that looks like crap with Sweeney Todd at the beginning for example Razz

Ok, I've got it!

First 30min impression - FANTASTIC. What a HUGE difference between this U2312HM and my old 226bw. wow.

So ips is not a urban legend Razz Colors are vibrant and viewing angles are totally free of problems.
It will be hard to stop my head from moving up when watching dark scenes or playing dark games Very Happy

and no problems. no dead pixels and no buzzing like some users described(that there can be aloud buzzing with brightness below 100. brightness and contrast at 75 here and no noise )

it's A06 revision from july 2012

TN - never again Razz
Thanks for help Smile

The screen seems fantastic. I am yet to test it but there seems to be no ghosting whatsoever.

The build quality and stand are fantastic tho a whole for cables in the stand could have been a little lower. cables are bending a bit. But I am paranoid to bending cables so thats ok Razz
