Quote:
FIFA and Battlefield publisher Electronic Arts has reportedly been making a play to purchase Half-Life and Portal studio Valve. The New York Times reports that EA has sought to purchase the firm for years, valuing the company at well over $1 billion.

Valve isn't likely to sell to anyone anytime soon.
According to "people with knowledge of the discussion," the talks did not progress far. Valve's finances are private, but a Forbes report from March estimated the firm's value at $3 billion, with cofounder Gabe Newell's personal net worth believed to be about $1.5 billion.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Of all the stupid moved EA has tried to make, this has to be the ballsiest idiotic move I've ever seen.

Reading between the lines that means EA has 1 billion to invest, which in turn means EA wont be going anywhere any time soon. They might not get Valve but they sure are expanding. Fucking fifa fans and fucking sims fans keep buying their products making EA rich every God dam year..

To me it shows they're scared of their competition and know with Steam running, Origin will forever live in it's shadow.

God know if they somehow DID manage to buy Valve EA would just fire everyone who's making a good wage.

The guy has integrity and i'm fairly sure he knows EA has none. So i don't see Valve ever getting bought.

I hope it never happens.

Gamers: Hey, EA, if you buy Valve, we'll never buy from Steam again.
EA: Hey, Gamers, have you heard of a killswitch?

What's with this valve obsession?

They haven't put out a good game since halflife 2. When was that again? Ages ago.

So wtf?

It isn't about putting out a good game. It's how they manage to their ecosystem altogether and please the customers.

I really don't see why "gamers" would give a flying fuck about that. Personally, i don't. I rather have EA buy them and release games instead of waiting forever for that half-life 3 that might not come.

Thats exactly the problem. Instead of having a quality game EA would milk the franchise dry, just look at what they did to Dragon Age. Compare the first game to the second and you'll have all the proof that whatever EA touches turns into derp.

The main problem is we don't have those quality games. Like i said earlier HL2 has been launched ages ago and since then nothing.

At least with EA you'd get some games, even if derped down or whatever.

Making games is just a hobby for Valve. It's no more their main income source.

sadly... maybe once they have so much money there aren't enough banks to keep it all, they'll return to the roots of making great games, instead of selling other people's games.

The industry and quite a hell of a lot of gamers would disagree with you regarding the quality of their games. But you already know that so..

Not having games released annually (or even every 2 years) is certainly better than most of EA's similarly timed efforts, yes.

Yes. Thoughts/behaviour like that is what perpetuates the continuing decline in the games industry.. Derrrps happy to get crap as long as they get anything, and crap they get.. and the rest of us are left with replaying old classics over and over until we've seen every pixel in every single one of those games.

That would be a waste of money. They don't need the extra (random) people, they have explained it's s very "brutal" process/interview which is the reason they hire so very few people.

I am not saying there is no talent in EA, but it would probably take a years to evaluate them all and most of them wouldn't make the cut.

And then you'd have hundreds++ people not knowing what to do, cause that's how Valve works (you have to figure on your own what you'd like to work on).

Quote:
“We’ll hire anyone who walks through the door who can pass our review process,” he said.
“The problem is very few people can do that successfully. The cost of lowering those standards is huge. But people we want to work with, we’ll try hiring them for years.”
The hiring process at Valve was described as gruelling by some of its employees.
Portal 2 lead developer Josh Weier said hopefuls have six interviews, with people of different disciplines, to attend through but a whole day.

“To be honest, it was brutal. They throw challenges at you that are out of your speciality,”
he said.

Newell said Valve operates in a way that it can only hire the finest people. The firm’s unique socialist structure means there are no line managers, and therefore there is a bigger risk in hiring people not up to the standard. He is confident the process pays dividends.

oh no, question out of your specialty comfort zone... the horror... that's so unheard of.

most self respecting companies do that, i don't see why it's worth mentioning in here and why does that make Valve so special. well i guess it's good learning experience because most people here never had a job Laughing

It's not simple as that, frequently they have explained how their eg sound engineers are among their best programmers and they do level design work as well etc.

Companies rarely invest with their own money afaik. I doubt EA has a spare 1 billion lying around.
