LIFX is a WiFi enabled, multi-color, energy efficient LED light bulb that you control with your iPhone or Android.

Yeah, I don't think I would use something like this.

Fuck it, I'm a PC guy and even I think it's a wicked idea. The price is nuts, $70 for a freakin' bulb is insane, but come on guys.. you don't think the idea is sound? Most of us have dimmer switches anyway, this would just be a remote controlled one -- that also has the bonus of being able to adjust the hue of the bulb. This is a bad thing? Once the price drops down to manageable levels ($10 bulb Laughing) then I'd definitely be interested.

If it can last for long time, I wouldn't mind paying 70$ for a few years. But it has to able to sustain power surges and so on, and I doubt it will. And it also looks pretty underpowered compared to regular light bulb, so I'd need several of these just to light the living room. Meh.

So every light bulb has it's own wifi mini network or what? I mean, what if someone else comes along with the app for this, they can also play with your lights? Or are they all specifically password protected? Laughing

I can see kids pranking ppl in their own homes, changing their settings from outside of the house Cool Face
I know that kids did that with those remote control watches grinhurt That was fun, like 10ish years ago Very Happy

there are people with "smart homes" out there and that doesn't happen. lol. and remi would need to spend a shit load on plane tickets to do that. lol.

this is pretty cool. only bit that interests me is the colour changing. pretty bad ass.
a lot cheaper than http://www.smarthome.com/2477DH/SwitchLinc-INSTEON-Remote-Control-Dimmer-Dual-Band-High-Wattage-White/p.aspx and with more features.

I cant. Modern fixtures have replaced the conventional lights, such as par can, in many ways already, so no gels needed. Often when conventional is used still, it is to get that warm fussy light. So led would go away anyway.

Led market in proffesionall lighting is way above LIFX.

As an example, I went on tour with these this summer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=PKBiIK7Yr1E

Can the app do cuestacks, presets, effects, faders, pallets, etc, etc as a real light table? Can the app talk to any light? What good is wifi when rest of bussiness uses dmx protocol? Obviously those bulbs can only be talked to with only that app. Limited. For 50$ you can get a led can that you can adress/standalone/whatever which can do everything the LIFX bulb can do.

For household it might be ok. Personally I stick with normal bulbs.

I redid my house will %100 LED bulbs because i was so sick and tired of changing them. The Phillips versions came with a 5 year warranty. But are designed to last 20+ years.
