Heh.. I lost a guy to disease after teleporting over to a ship in distress, then lost another guy to a random boarding/raiding party event. The game is still merciless even if you cut out the fleet chase.

i tried one game with fleet chase disabled, on normal. exploring ~95% of the jump beacons really adds up the scrap - when i killed the final boss i had everything upgraded to maximum and still almost 1000 scrap left over. played as the fleet cruiser.
ah well, at least i unlocked the stealth ship, gonna try a proper playthrough with that. so far i have finished the game with kestrel (easy), torus (normal), fleet cruiser (no chase normal) - loving it!

I was happy to beat the boss with my cruiser while i only had 1 hp bar left (with chase)..... i thought i was done for sure
Today i got my second layout engi ship with ALL the good stuff completely upgraded, drone recovery pod with 2x ship attack v1, 1x defence v2 and hull repair drone and the insta ready weapon thingy. But i got raped because i wasnt paying enough attention...... AAARGGHHH the pain
Empty again

RNG. RNG and luck. That's all it is |
are you keeping your lasers on autofire? are you hitting the opponents guns?
i usually upgrade engines and blast doors first on my ships, because it tends to give lots of flexibility in survival.
engines because i find my survivability skyrocketing when i manage to take out the enemy guns - if i manage to hurt it so it becomes orange (not completely) disabled i watch for which of their guns are remaining. if a missile launcher remains, divert power to the engines and try to evade the missiles, if a blaster or beam remains, divert power to the shields and just tank the damage. just keep blasters hammering away at the weapons room with autofire and shoot beams instantly when shields are down.
blast doors because with level 3 blast doors, even relatively weak crew (such as zoltan or human, not engi though) can take care of boarding actions with ease. just vent the airlock closest to the place where they boarded and gather 2 crew members in a larger room. when they finally break in there, they will be at 20-50hp, making them easy prey for your crew. its a bit different with boarding drones, but maxed out blast doors give you enough time to take out or partially disable the drone control, before the drone breaks in to a priority system room.
then again, reading through what i just typed, i see where youre coming from. even when trying to pull off my standard strategy, sometimes i just get supremely unlucky in sector 1 and die or almost die, requiring me to divert too much scrap into repairs and fall behind on the power curve. still, i found my favourite playstyle (which i just described) when i managed to complete it the first time with the overpowered engi ship and ever since i started using it, im finding the game a lot easier.

I found the big guns to be useless mostly because I can't power all of them, it's better to have two Burst Lasers II then 1 BL II and 1 BL III, with the former I can also use my double missile-launcher or my fire beam, you simply have more weapons.

@PumpAction, i have found improved blast doors to be the best counter to boarders. they allow you to win easily in the beginning (vent airlocks, door tanks while they take dmg from suffocation, 'fighter' crewmembers kill low hp boarders), which gives your' crewmembers combat xp and allows them to tackle boarding drones later on. if you get hit by a boarding drone early in the game - tough luck, its the way she goes.
@keewee23, there is a ship upgrade that gives you extra scrap every time you get some, and there is a ship upgrade that repairs hull damage but causes you to collect less scrap. you should use one of those, if your playstyle requires more scrap. thats gonna mean going for a gamble early on though and roaming a sector with 100+ scrap left over, looking for a shop that sells it. if you are having trouble with the final boss, try using burst lasers, or lasers of any kind that shoot several times, or missiles. if you can knock out the weapons that are destroying you (pay attention to which one shoots the stuff that stuff that kills you) you shouldnt have much of a problem surviving. until you get raped by fire and boarding drones in stage 2 at least, as i have been several times

I've gotten the best results (getting further and beating the boss more often) with boarding parties. Especially if you get some mantis crew members and level them up early. Max out your shields asap and farm experience on some low level ship with only lasers - this will save you later in the game. The idea here is to max out evasion and shield recharge to give your boarding parties more time to wreck havoc.

You can encounter new ones if you're lucky, or you can buy them at the odd shop.
Most I've recruited in one game is ten crew!

Boarding an enemy ship to defeat them yields more scrap than destroying the ship and you also get weapons and crew members sometimes that way.
Try it if you've been ignoring the teleporter.

more than if you kill the enemy crew to fire?
best combination i've had so far has been ion cannon (disable shields) and fire beam (burn everything, suffocate enemy)

Burning the enemy works just as well.
Only drawback is the smell.

I got to an impasse with the boss. I destroyed his weapons with my away team but I'm unable to do anything else because I don't have weapons that would penetrate his shields and do some sustainable damage and he can't shoot me. And my away team can't kill anyone else because they keep healing themselves.

About dealing with boarding parties:
Just send some of your crew to fight with them, when the alarm goes off, pause and order your crewmember to the first aid station to heal. Usually the enemy doesn't heal, or teleport back, so once your crewmembers heal, send them again to fight the enemy. And I have yet to see a bording party that kills my crewmembers, while they are in the first aid station, and there were plenty of tries

Improve doors to maximum and open space locks.... without oxygen they will die fast becouse max. improved doors will hold long enough. Of course there is also chance for boarding drone... then I just hope to disable drone control system.

IF the enemy ship has a medbay they WILL transport back to heal, ive seen them do it a lot of times, the only time they stay to death is when they dont have a medbay. Sometimes they go back when their ship is about to warp away.

It's a mod, that disables the rebel fleet chasing you. As simple as that. Therefore there's all the time in the world to explore and collect scrap and other things.
I tried it. It makes the game way easy in my opinion.
