nope you can play online with your sp char. and as far i can see, with your cheated sp char.
there is no such mp only chars, or secure mp servers, which sucks from my pov. thats the reason i stopped playing tq.

I have tried all characters for 45 minutes or so, the engineer is seriously overpowered (healbot + shotgun) completely killing the fun.

i specced mine to 2h "tank", very fun class to play.
2str/1dex/2vit.
got tanky passives, and only the first attack skill, which you get automatically at start.
specced heal bot to, but i forget to use it in most cases. (veteran dificulty).
probably on elite i would use it often.
intend to continue on tanky spec, and get the high level bot.

heh engineer is my first character, took healbot + shotgun, and yes, it's way too easy... don't mind restarting with another character though, having a lot more fun than i thought i would.

It gets harder, quickly. Also, make sure you are playing on at least Veteran or Elite. The first few maps are (I guess) not meant to be too challenging.

No, it's no shame. It's a shame they didn't have as high budget for Torchlight as Blizzard had for Diablo 3. But it would be just icing on cake if it had better voice acting, or some cool cutscenes, it's not necessary.

Yeah it's understandable that they decided to spend their limited resources on the primary aspects, gameplay>everything else after all. Maybe with the third one?
By the way, I started a new game choosing veteran and it's indeed much better now. Don't do the same mistake as me, avoid the normal difficulty like the plague.

I don't think you need a lot of resources or money to do a proper story. I don't mind the story itself, it was crap in Diablo too, but these guys put zero effort into teh storytelling. It's done very bland and boring. It's just lazy, I expect a dev to atleast give it a try.
Gameplay rocks though.

Does it work?

they work, but most of them label you as cheater i read. but they don't forbid to play with that cheated char online.
on the other hand, you can block that player, and he canot join your game, nor you can see his games.

Thanks for the info. Good to know
But, if I create a char, enter a offline game, give me a lot of money, exit the game, disable the console, restart the game, enter a multiplayer game using that char, will that char be labeled as a cheater? ... that will be interesting to test.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you ;D. We're not picky, some proper dialogues/deeper characters + static comic-like cutscenes here and there and everything would have been much more immersive.

Well, I tried the Berserker and I think he is overpowered. So it seems all classes have something that can make them super strong. I literally didnt have to chug a potion until late Act 2 and I am Melee all the time.
I stacked Focus and got Execute chance up to 80%. With the Shadow skill that lets you heal and the skill that lets you heal on Criticals, you are pretty much invincible. Add to it that Rampage gives you + movement speed, Berserk gives you + movement speed and you can cast Haste III and you are basically flying through the maps. Great for backtracking. Lots of fun!
Anyone found any good mods yet? Prolly too soon, but still. I really want one to increase Stash Capacity and one to increase item drop rate (or Magic Find) to some ridiculous number. Not that I would want to ruin my game but I want to see all the Unique and Legendary items, purely out of curiousity (unless there is a site which has them, in which case you could just point me there).
All in all, great game and with mods, serious potential for the future with new quests, locations, bosses, classes and so on.

As a Diablo game, in terms of pure gameplay, it's a great game but I got to agree that the "fluffing" as I call it, leaves a lot to be desired. The music is there but the mood and atmosphere isn't, the story and setting is almost anonymous. The pace of the story is all wrong and it really almost feels like an MMO in approach to quests. The linked areas also feel very random - I preferred Diablo 2's themed areas by far. It's really all about the action but that's about all you're getting too - the online element isn't a patch on that of Diablo II and Diablo II was hardly without fault there. Being able to cheat and play online also means there's no real economy, no trading which is one of D2's strong points.

I'm with a few of the other people in this thread... The skills are so goddamn bad I have barely put any points into anything.. ESPECIALLY the Berserker. I look ahead in his trees and see literally NOTHING that I want.
ZZzzzz... :\

After playing D3, it feels strange to play a hack and slash where you get item upgrades from drops... great game, having a blast with berserker towards the end of act2. Love how big the randomly generated areas are too.

I was kind of like you at first, i had like 15 skill points saved up and didnt know where to put them.
I plan on maxing that first skill you start with (Eviscerate).. it gets better and better every 5 points. Also, Wolf Strike is great mobility + stun + aoe skill... might max that too. Got a bunch of points into Rend and Tear, Rampage, Frenzy Mastery. The one that increases chance to execute is nice too if you dual wield.
I agree with you on the Ice skill tree, dont see much there worth getting. I can see some effective builds there, but it would take much more work than doing a berserk/crit build.
I tried one of the wolf summoning skills and it seemed ok, but has a long cooldown and needs lots of investment to get it to where i'd want it to be, so i'll worry about it later.
In terms of stat points i have almost equal dex and str, and 40ish vit and seem to be surviving ok.
