I vaguely remember Full Spectrum Warrior to have some decent moments.. but maybe I'm wrong.. and there was another squad based game like that that I can't remember... it was World War II I think. Brothers in Arms maybe...
Although maybe they felt more intense than they were because I sucked at them, can't remember.

probably because those shitty headphones you bought. Dice doesn't win sound awards all the time for no reason. They're one of the only companies that'll take firearms out to the field with sound gear to record them. If you never fired a gun, all guns have an echo, and you'd be deaf if you didn't go shooting with ear protection. Shit is LOUD. |

Battlefield 3 has the best sounds ever made in game. Dead Space 1 also has very nice sound effects.

Except for the echo part you just described CoD2 actually 
If it's bombastic sound effects you are after, I still think that there's nothing out there that can beat Battlefield. Bad Company 2 might be a better fit in your case, since it was more over the top than BF3 is.
Also I really like how Company of Heroes sounds when you crank it up... It really did feel like those machine guns could tear stuff apart  |

Black Mesa. Has excellent sound effects. They even made the pea shooter 9mm pistol sound beefy.

Revelations 2012 has really good sound, when you shoot a rock surface it says "[Rock Impact]". That right there is some of the best sound I've ever read.
