That was a very short and limited demo where I could hardly make any of my own choices. However it was nice to be able to see how the game looks and feels.

what's in? only the starting-piloted mission?

There are two tutorial missions and one part where you're in the base and can customize a character. The demo was pretty good (and performance was great on the highest settings, over 100 fps using only a 4.0 ghz phenom II and gtx 560 ti). My only issue is...why do all the soldiers have American accents?

Well I read an interview that Firaxis had gone extra lengths to make proper ethnicities for different countries, for example South African troops can be black or white (and the whites are split between British and Dutch). So it's just strange that they wouldn't include proper voices as well.

There are things that really turned me off. Sad

the combat is ok I guess, but since it was only two tutorial missions, I cannot really comment otherwise. Hope there will be random, less linear maps later on.

What worries me is the upgrade system. The heavy guy got a skill which automatically grants the rocket launcher? Really? No more squad equipping? I purposefully didn't follow this, so I wouldn't be biased, but what the hell...That means no more manufacturing either? Are You Serious

Also, squad size can be raised through Officer Training School? Really? Not by buying/building a bigger dropship?

Coupled with the horror stories about linear mission structure, I'll sit this one out with an ISO-demo, because as it looks now, it's waaaaay too removed from the original. I'm not against trying new stuff, but why change things that didn't need changing?

How can I download the demo? Keep clicking on the button on the steam page but it keeps looping me back to the homepage.

Any other way?

1 and 2 are still amazing.

I had the same problem. Restart Steam, go to Store -> Demos -> XCOM and start the download from there. Worked for me.

I am guessing that its maybe a "standard" weapon you get, then later as u research and manufacture new weapon systems u can equip them and replace the "standard".
Anyways just guessing, but think they showed off already that u can equip new stuff etc.

I stand corrected, there is squad equipping, so disregard that criticism. Smile Just the badly worded tutorial dialogue got me confused and didn't notice the equipment option at the soldier promotion. Looks oversimplified, but still better than nothing I guess.

Tried the demo... what a piece of shit. It's made a mockery of X-Com.
Go here, now go here. Oh and commander? click this button, now click this button. Herp derp.
A rocket launcher is an ability now? what?!
What happened to having equipment?
Why is there bonuses to the placement of the base? this is some dumbed down shit. The only bonus there should be should be the location and the satisfaction of the country in which the base is placed. Not 50% cheaper and faster fighters or instant autopsy - how does an instant autopsy even make sense.
And I can't upgrade my radar and scan for ufo's I just go from mission to mission in a linear fashion. Doing what I'm told by the asshole in mission control.
Could find no way of turning off the action sequences either.

As I expected, it's not much of a X-COM game. Should've been called Gears of Du..aliens: Shallow Turn-Based Popamole.

Hopefully the demo was just the absolute worst part of the game, and it magically opens up after those 2 missions.

Looking forward to the real game Smile
The Demo was alright, but they should have put a third non-tutorial mission into the mix.
Would also have been nice to be able to visit all the parts of the base.

1. It was tutorial. You can skip it in full game and go straight into action with no more holding your hand.
2. There is equipment for soldiers.
3. Matter of taste. I like those bonuses actually.
4. You can scan for UFOs, you can expand your scanning range by building and deploying satelites them around the globe.
5. You didn't look hard enough Smile I think camera options are in Gameplay section of the Options, don't remember.

Anyway, this demo does nothing to indicate what the full game will be, it's just stupid tutorial showing shit. They could at least give us some normal mission...

What I didn't like was that even when using mosue+KB I stll felt that interface was designed around consoles. The 3D cursor is sluggish/laggy, you can't rotate the camera using mouse and the whole interface lacks responsivness... Really disappointed in that regard.

Precisely. I've give up after the first tutorial mission.
I'll try later again. But so far I really hated the control feeling.

So disappointed with the demo - it's truly is a console game through and through. Maybe the tactical part will be good, but as far as controls and UI are concerned it's very uncomfortable and awkward on PC.

If the controls trouble you, give it a try with a gamepad. Gamepads are not a console only input system.

If the gameplay troubles you, well that's another thing.

Well. Definitely no buy after the demo. Will check out the ISO Demo when it's out.

I have to agree that the promised PC UI is not intuitive at all.
The gameplay consist mostly of Gears of War in TBS Smile You have to move from cover to cover or else your soldier is simply dead. And boy it's simplified. No wounds with inpact on anything except "will" so no matter how hard your unit was hit he is just as fit to fight as with full health just more prone to panic :/ No ammo, you can have only one shot with rocket launcher and limited number of grenades.
And that mission structure... I hope it's more random. And the biggest lol there is, is that you can choose only one mission at one time. You can't have 2 transports and send your respond teams simultaneously.
Oh! and max 6 soldiers on a mission - lol.

I haven't felt any sense of danger in that demo. None, zero, nada... When in original UFO and even its clone Extraterrestrials you never knew when enemy could take you down with opportunity fire from the mists of fog of war.

Xenonauts - you better don't fuck up.
