The longest Journey. In my first attempt, I was turned off by the slow start and thought it to be the most overrated Adventure ever. A few years later, I gave it another chance and fell in love with it.

Dead Island: I found it solid but repetitive at first, then thanks to mods which improved various aspects (from graphics to gameplay) I got into it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Risen 2: it looked extremely cheap and "dumbified" at first (I feared another Arcania), to the point that I almost shift-deleted it. Then I gave it a second chance and it definitely entertained me. Still rough (and dat combat system), but better than I expected.

Planescape Torment: the incredible amount of dialogues and written material scared me the first time that I tried to play it, then I saw the light.

Binary Domain: in this case I blame the demo (the real one), since the level was incredibly generic and uninspired, and the gameplay not exactly mind-blowing. The full game on the other hand got my full attention thanks to the good story/characters and interesting bosses.

Dark Souls: the hideous PC port and the fact that it was almost unplayable with m/k horrified me during the first hours of play. Then once again mods fixed everything and the game became much more enjoyable (although far from perfect in my opinion).

Fallout 3.

Now when I think of it, I can't understand WHY I hated it at first? After reading some forums how good it is I gave it another shot. It's one of the best RPG's I have played!

Basically this. I installed F3, disliked it, uninstalled it. A few months later, with nothing to play, I gave it another shot. And this time I got hooked. And now just thinking about it, gives me the desire to play again.

Morrowind. Before it, I mostly played linear first-person shooters, strategies and Neverwinter Nights (which is a linear hack & slash), so I was actually affraid of being in a such insanely huge world (ofc first time it looked almost infinite comparing to after countless hours of playthrough, but still). I was uninstalling it like 2-3 times but reinstalling after reading the reviews by people who, unlike todays reviewers, didn't sound like they got their education from TV, so finally I grown a pair and it was magnificent.

Skyrim (loved Morrowind, hated Oblivion) and the original Mount and Blade, probably. Went on to play both for well over 100 hours after initially bouncing off.

Quite a few, but the absolute stand out for me would be Binary Domain. After playing the game for all of ten minutes, I uninstalled and deleted epically fast, discarding it for a few weeks until a bunch of Humpers started talking about how remarkably good it was -- so I tried it again. I'm extremely glad I did as the game ends up being brilliant.

Rage
-turned out to be a fantastic shooter, and in its own, admittedly low resolution way, was actually very good looking when you take into account the organic design of the levels (may seem kinda dumb to say, but as long as you didnt look at shit too closely, it LOOKED great... i guess if you agree, you know what i mean, if you disagree or havent played the game... then fine, bring on the head-scratching emoticon Very Happy)

Fallout 3 and NV.
-funnily enough, i love both games, but i have NEVER been able to get into them on the first go. fallout 3 took me THREE tries, fallout nv took me 2. loved em both, glad i went back to try em again, especially fallout 3.

Bulletstorm
-it kinda qualifies... first, i installed a pirated version but it wouldnt launch so i said fuck it and uninstalled it. second, when i got the game on steam and installed it, i almost gave up after the first or second level... glad i gave it another try; finished it, and loved it. it was wacky over the top leave your brain at the door fun fun fun.

Crysis.
-Cant remember why, but i remember not finishing it the first time. went back, and.. i dunno.. maybe id matured a bit in what i wanted from games, and i could appreciate the slower more deliberate pace it had (compared to other shooters), and i utterly loved it. fantastic game.

Divine Divinity stands out for me because I remember so well that first impression. Didn't know really what it was before I tried it, and when I launched it I just thought "What a heck is this bad Diablo-clone?" and closed the game. I tried it later on when I was bored and found one of the best action-rpgs that is. I loved Diablo and I loved Ultima 7, and DD was kind of a mix between them both.

Hearts of Iron 3. After playing through the tedious tutorial that explains nothing, I start a game as Germany and the research screen confuse the hell out of me because I have no knowledge of the names of weapons. Then Sempi Fi apparently changed it to generic words and I played over 100hours of that game.

Another would be Arma2. Again for similar reasons, plus the terrible UI and my not powerful enough laptop.

lol... really havent felt even slightly inclined to reinstall me3 for another play with the dlc...

maybe when all the dlc is out, and the game has a final 'ending' (is it still fair to assume there will be more dlc set after the game eventually? or has that been confirmed as NOT happening... i honestly havent been following news on thsi game at ALL)- anyway, when all the dlc is out, and the game finally gets a complete trilogy+dlc release on steam, ill get it and give it another playthrough Smile

its weird, because mass effect 2 - no joke - was the first game i think ive EVER played and then immediately after, played it through AGAIN straight away... had no such compulsion with me3... guess it just goes to show, bioware you fucktards, just how important it is not to fuck your ending up ISNT IT.

Dwarf Fortress. Gave it a try for five minutes at first. Obviously this isn't something that you just sit and start playing like a regular new game.

And obviously I failed to grasp it and forgot about the game for a year or so. Gave it another try not so long ago. Having so much... what they call "fun". Very Happy

I miss the time when games were about gameplay>graphics Sad

But seriously, i know there are games that i hated the first time i played them, but i cannot remember any specific name. the above are 3 games that i gave a second chance to and they disappointed me even more.

Just one. Dwarf Fortress.

Gave it up once, a long long time ago, due to its learning cliff face. Then for no reason other than a few let's play videos, I picked it up again and once I got past the solid rock exterior, I realized that there is an immensely deep and entertaining game inside.

No mercy, no regret, no remorse. Games rarely ever get a second chance in my book and I'm perfectly fine with that Smile

thief
i played it like a derp and thought it was mediocre
then tried again a year later and saw the godlike aura of stealth it had and it's now my favourite franchise

there's actually more games that i keep retrying because people here and elsewhere have such love for them, and always end up agreeing with my initial perception that they just sucked
- witcher1/2
- alpha protocol
- mass effect *
- fallout 3 / nv
- borderlands
- dwarf fortress

longest journey is actually on my to-redo list
i hope i won't be let down

Still looks as great as ever? It's not like games in general (yeah there's exceptions like Witcher 2 of course) have made big leaps graphically these last few years.

1. Evil Islands.
It had to wait 3 years to be installed again after a 5 minute first playthrough. Finished it 5 times since then.
2. Icewind Dale . Also played it for a bit and forgot for 2-3 years, then went on to finish it several times...Heart of Fury...mmmmmmm (insert Homer voice)
3. Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption. Ditto.

Gothic 1 I loved from the first time I saw it in a computer magazine in 2002. I downloaded a rip from KaZaa, was pleasantly surprised by the lack of hardcore gay porn instead of game, played a bit, bought it. I do a full replay at least once per year. Still great.

Actually now that i start to think about it witcher isnt one of those games that you revisit and find something awesome about it and it starts to grow on you, no. You either connect with the character or you dont, there's no hidden gameplay mechanics, its not about developing your character, its about the adventure.. the story.. the plot.. and its brilliant.

I gave Hitman Blood Money a second chance after playing the console version back in 2006. I only finished the first 2 missions on console and decided it was shit

I recently started playing it on PC and I LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smile
