so it got 9.5 from game informer
Quote: | Concept:
Defend the earth from a terrifying alien invasion with global strategy and boots-on-the-ground tactical genius
Graphics:
The Unreal Engine 3 graphics won’t win any technical awards, but the presentation does a great job of making turn-based strategy visually interesting
b]Sound:[/b]
Michael McCann’s futuristic score is exceptional. The voice work is competent, but too limited
Playability:
The occasional line-of-sight problem is a price worth paying for this otherwise excellent minimalist interface, which works equally well on gamepad or mouse/keyboard
Entertainment:
The XCOM team’s love for the unapologetic hardcore PC games of old is matched by its unwavering dedication to making the world and events personal and immediate in a way the strategy genre has never achieved
Replay:
High
|
PC port note:
Code: | The PC version is slightly superior thanks to improved textures and resolution and drastically lower load times, but those are minor differences. XCOM plays equally well with mouse/keyboard and gamepad, and features identical content across all three platforms, so grab it for whichever system you prefer. |

Quote: | Jake didn't like XCOM's combat. Combat 2.0, as it was then called, was very similar to the combat in the original game. For him it was too similar. Its turn-based action had time units and large squads, just like the original, and cover was nowhere near as important as it is now. But layered on top were unit abilities and other new features. It was a straight up remake of the original with a sprinkle of modern day mechanics, and it wasn't working.
"We were overburdening this old combat system with all these new things we wanted to do," Jake tells me in the lobby, not far from the room they call the Fish Bowl. "It was a mistake design wise."
"I was like, I don't think this is working all that well. I think I need to go away and think about this for a little bit. People were like, this is cool! This is just like the original XCOM! But people who didn't know the original XCOM were like, this is a little weird. I get what's fun about this but it's a little strange. |
People thought the reworked combat system which was akin to the old X-Com was cool, but the lead designer changed it to what it is, so as to better appeal to the console audience, well thats not what he says, but it's between the lines.

Preload is up. Like 12 Gigs.
Waiting for my key, and same as Darksiders II fuckers think that Latin America is in Europe or some shit.
They should release the game the same day as a "thank you" note for not pirating everything like we always do here.

"it's between the lines" is another way of saying the product of your paranoid mind
I don't know how their original design went, but the 2 action system is pretty slick, and I say that as a PC gamer. It's similar to a number of games, tabletop card games, pen and paper RPGs, etc. The console argument is short sighted.
Their multiplayer design uses a strict time limit system to keep the game flowing and intensity levels high. Simplifying action points was a necessary step, in my humble opinion. A 90 second turn timer would not have worked using the outdated time unit system.
Other tactical remakes have also ditched time units. Jagged Alliance Back in Action abandoned time units for actual measurements in seconds and hundredths of seconds, and a real time system which allows pausing at any moment to re-evaluate commands. However, that kind of system could not have worked with X-COMs multiplayer goals.

It should be emphasized that this game is built on a 3D engine which has been modded by fans for years. I think it's a safe bet there could be some remarkable things done. It may not be the simplest thing to mod at first, but if the data files get cracked open, we could see total conversions and modifications to gameplay. I'd love to see a WH40K skirmish mod based on this engine, just to suggest an example of what we may see in the coming years.
The only hurdle I see to such a thing would be a better competing turn based tactical game being released in the next year or two. Hrm, shadowrun returns maybe?

GMG is sending out keys. Pre-loading now and it's quite big actually (that's what she said) - 12.4GB, but I guess most of it are movies...

I understand that it's not going to get out on the pc until the 9th but how it is not out for the xbox is a big mistery. Hopefully it's not because the lack of interest for such kind of games.
