Yeah, thief had both mechanics of where you hide in the shadows and mask your footsteps by shooting moss arrows to dampen the sound of your boots.
So it's absolutely nothing new, however considering all the derpyness for the past....8 or so years where stealth means kill everything and leave no witnesses then this is new.

The similarities between Dishonored and Deus Ex are more than Thief and Dishonored.
Game mechanics, progression, npc's, even something that I cannot talk about due to spoilers.
The thing that stand out from the Thief games that was also in this one is the way loot is handled.
The co-lead designer on this was also the lead designer on Deus Ex.
I have to say, bethesda is king at hyping stuff up. It was like this with skyrim, and now dishonored. Although dishonored will be alot less populair I presume, since its a new franchise and all, and stealth games not being as mainstream as the usual fps.

I think the all the gameplay videos and developer extensive commentaries did a much better job hyping the games
