Fuck this - just bought it via steam, I already know I am going to play it 100+ hours, so what if it costs some pennies more an hour. Hope the magic vpn trick works fine for me as well.
And seeing as some of these guys are old Microprose workers, I am glad to finally give them some money for all the microprose games I played back in the 90ties.
Civ series, Darklands, Grand Prix series, Master of Magic, Master of Orion I/II, Microprose Soccer, Red Storm Rising, Sid Meier's Pirates!, Silent Service I/II and the X-Com games. Now play some old ol grunge and thats half my youth
There are two kinds of people I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.
Finally, after that long ass tutorial phase (I'd call it torture phase), the game is picking up. Imho the battles are somewhat more difficult as in two classics because of equipment restrictions (For example, you could give every soldier a medkit but he won't have a grenade or anything else. Could be changing later on though).
Just went to the grocer etc and knew when I got back the game would be pre-loaded and ready - but nooooooooooo the steam pre-load stopped because my computer went into sleep mode!
So now I have to wait an hour, which is the exact time before "our" guests arrive.
Third world feel my pain!

After 3 hours on Classic IronMan I'm in love! The tension during missions is unbelievable, every shot counts like it's the last one, you mutter to yourself "come on, come on" when they shoot and curse when they miss, every soldier is so valuable and you attach to them so quickly, and every death is a truly sad.
The strategic layer is awesome - your choices really matter and you have to juggle between expanding base, doing appropraite research, caring for certain countries, selecting proper missions etc. and still maintaining proper fundin - the startegic/base part is imho definetely more complex and important than in original, at least so far. Overal: top notch game so far.
The game is hard.. if you are thiking: "oh, i will go classic/ironman, cuz i have ballz", well.. think again.. I had such balls myself, but then i met some aliens, who ripped them off and ate them and they weren't even the hungry kind.
So far the game meets all my expectations and considering how high those were, its quite an accomplishment. There are a few strange clipping issues and the game sometimes has a hard time to decide whether to show me the top floor or the bottom floor of a building, but those are minor compared to the sheer fun this game is.
Oh before I forget.. if you are a perfectionist like me, then you better curb it back a little. Pulling a mission off without losses is .. well.. out of some 20 missions I played until now, I managed to do it once, compared to the 6-8 complete wipes, thats a rather horrifying ratio and no.. I'm actually quite decent at tactical games. It's just that the odds are stacked heavily against you.
Example: take on 7 thin mans and 3 floaters with 5 guys out of which 2 are rookies and are all using basic gear.
As for the strategic part:
I managed to lose 1 country during the first month and the council was impressed with my progress (not kidding), lost 2 more the second month and they were enthusiastic...
Sure I generally did well, but even though it did not look like it, I was already losing the war. at the start of the third month, I had 6 more nations on the brink of flipping and basically no way of turning them back
Playing the strategic part is a game of such delicate balance that it will take a few games before you get it right.
Bottomline: awesome game.. if you have not bought it yet, do so.
Also some shit about saving the hit result so save-load doesn't work on missed shots- so everytime when you have missed and reloaded you will now always miss that shot.
A pre-defined seed. That's actually a really good thing.
What if you load then save again?
Does it give a new seed or does it check if there's an existing one and keeps that?

I've already lost 7 guys and I don't have enough money to buy satellites to cover the rest of the world, so three nations have dropped out. And this is only on normal difficulty.
That music is amazing!!! I would pretty much pick it up if they used the same music, dooo want. Well maybe not but it was indeed epic.
Did some research, it seems like they didn't, which is a shame imo. It could make you nostalgic, and give you the feeling that you are actually playing an x-com game.
