I don't think so, the enemies are just more aggressive and you'll meet harder alien types much earlier in the game.

If I turn vsync off I get over 100 fps most of the time, that's on a 3.8 ghz quad core and gtx 570. Load times are only 2-3 seconds but I have it installed on my SSD.

Smooth as silk on my budget 5560G Laptop (A6-3240M cpu + 7670M graphics:)
Enjoying it, too. Difficulty is really satisfying on Classic, was going to go for Ironman but I think I'll work on my strategy with this playthough first.
