2 years are nothing considering the scope of this, the more I watch his gdc presentation the more impressed I get, and made my decision easy to pledge 200€.

This might be everything I ever wanted in a space sim game all at once, going to be epic! Smile

They get it from paypal. I just paid the 24 euros through the european site as well. You'll make an account after you paid.

yup that's also one of the things that won me over. If that's already possible this early in the game I foresee cantinas with player gatherings, or possibly even added ground combat later in development (if the customers ask for it) will not be much of a problem. Looking forward to alpha already! Very Happy Also, I hope they'll get the 2 mil they deserve all Humpers should back this asap! xD

Right now the system is offline and has to be done manuelly. The wrote in the news this morning, that the amount of pledges right now is about 460 000 Dollar. So perhaps now 480 000 or 500 000 Dollar.

Thats 25% of the goal.. after 2 Days! Nice Smile

This better have flightstick support. So tired of space"sims" where combat amounts to playing popamole with the mouse.

I played Wing Commander II - opened it on Christmas day with my brothers, 7 floppy disks... the 7th one was broken and we had to wait like 3 weeks to get a replacement, but my goodness it was such a good game.

Played all Wing Commanders since then, and Freelancer was amazing, and it was the last space game I played as nothing came close...

Can't wait for this - just need to go and buy a joystick!

Buy a HOTAS and rudder pedals instead. Wink
I think I've heard Chris saying that you would be able to use your flight gear.
I hope they are able to create a good interface system for the different type of controls (keyboard/mouse and joystick). If this is a PC game we shouldn't see gaypads support.

Indeed, why not? Gamepad is a poor man's flightstick, but it's still the next best thing.

Thinking in what pillerman said, I think he's right. Maybe it could be better than the mouse.
It never had crossed my mind. Gamepads belongs to the console culture. It's always away from the frame of my gaming mind.

These are the closest things to gamepad which I have ever played with:

Maybe it's a generation gap. Sad

You do realise that joysticks, the vaunted "PC Master Race" control method for flight/space sims actually came from consoles, right? Wink Honestly, I wouldn't use a 360 controller for a space sim .. but I can see why some would. I prefer mouse and keyboard Razz

Well that's arguable. Wink
They were being used before consoles and personal computers existed.

This is from a Gemini spacecraft.

I'm talking about the control input in general, which started off as the default console controls -- and even on the early home computers like C64/Spectrum, such as the Quickshot and Kempston sticks. I'm sorry, I just think the constant - and rather baseless - console hatred is tiring now Sad

Well I surely understand your feelings about computers and consoles. Very Happy
But for me there was never a doubt. I always liked more computer games than video games.

i dont know about roberts vision, but when he answered multiplayer technology questions with : we dont have to worry about lag or bandwith at all because we will go the world of tanks/bf3 30 player instanced server routine. I puked and took all the money back i trew at the screen before ... pretty much every sector, warpgate , every location will be instanced and player limited ...

instances ... are you kidding me, i want to play 200v200 in massive space invasions and assaults on space sectors.

Umm. How do you think it would be possible to do 200v200 massive space invasions in a real open world, when there are so many complex calculations going on under the hood and the processing power to achieve the fidelity the game currently has? I think you are overestimating our currently technology here.

What you are talking about here are something so massive in scale that makes Arma 2 looks like an iOS game.

i have been playing bf2 mods that allowed up to 250 people online with a serverhack, (with such complex vehicles they are manned with 2/3 people) , and also warband has 250 player servers. And thats 7 year old technology so i dont think 200 vs 200 is that far fetched.

Planetside also is pulling it off. Seriously 30 people in an instance ... in space ... youd have more luck getting hit by a asteroid then finding a player Very Happy

Didn't he say it was 60-100 players? Anyway the point is, it is still incredibly hard to pull off. Just the poly-count on the characters beats anything we have seen in a game so far. The fidelity of Planetside 2 is nothing in comparison. Planetside 2 has no "limit" on players for each server, but the game itself is simplistic in contrast. Wink Not to mention Planetside 2 is just a massive map. 40sqkm was it? I'm pretty sure Space is more than that Laughing

you should watch the entire presentation (link on previous page i believe), theres seperate combat instances made by the system when the server calculates that your paths cross. Those have max 60-100 players. That makes this doable.

A Message from Chris Roberts:

Quote:
When I said I missed old school difficulty to gaming you probably didn’t think that I would make the pledge process more difficult than fighting the toughest boss monster in Demon’s Souls!

Well neither did I!

Wednesday morning we set out to prove that PC gaming and Space Sims are not dead… and prove it, we did!

We’re absolutely floored by the attention and humbled by your comments. We hoped everyone would be excited about the big idea behind Star Citizen and Squadron 42 — but we had no expectation about the kind of praise and interest we received yesterday.

The downside of all this attention was that the huge number of people from all around the world trying to learn about Star Citizen and make their pledge, crashed our custom crowd funding page and also took down the core community site.

Until then, we were on track to break crowd funding records. Now, thirty hours later, we’re only just getting the core site back online. The proper crowd funding page is still unfortunately down, but we have a backup site that, while not having the full range of features we intended, can take people’s pledges. With this site we have to update the data manually as there is no way to easily collect the crowd funding statistics on a live basis, which is why you haven’t seen a counter on the backup site. We are working very hard to get the main crowd funding plug in to play nice with the rest of the site, so we can deliver the seamless experience we envisioned when opting to have the crowd funding integrated into the main community site. Don’t worry, no one has lost their golden ticket, and we will ensure that everyone who makes a pledge on the backup site is connected to their community account. Please be patient while we organize this process.

We didn’t just set out to raise money to build a game; we set out to build a community. The intention was never to shut off the forums, disable the Golden Tickets or stop the flow of information after the launch; anything but. We hope you’ll bear with us as we get the community back online. The features you’ve enjoyed for the past month will continue — the Comm-Link, RSI Museum and Time Capsule — along with much more information about Star Citizen and chances to interact with its development team. As we move forward in this endeavor, you are our strongest asset; a vanguard of dedicated fans who will help us build and promote this game.

If you’re one of the lucky few warriors that snuck past the Java trolls and WordPress goblins to access the pledge site yesterday, thank you so much for your dedication.

If not, we promise we’ve beaten back these evil interlopers and ask you to pledge and spread the word to make this new universe possible. We are listening to you on the forums, are committed to giving you daily updates and will be rolling out some exciting new features in the coming days that hopefully make up for our initial snafu.

We lost the opportunity to break the first day record, but the race isn’t over yet! We currently stand at $455, 590 raised from 4,564 pledges which is pretty impressive considering the outage we’ve had. Seems everyone wants the RSI Constellation and physical goodies!

But we need get this up. Space Sims trumped RPGs in the old days, let’s get a little of that inter-genre friendly rivalry back!

If you haven’t made your pledge yet, please do as I would hate for the technical problems to have derailed our initial momentum. We still have a ways to go but I have no doubt with your support we will get there. This is our chance to tell the world: PC gaming and space sims are BACK!
