They last longest.

My 5yo cheftec 450W still works great.

The retailer I buy my parts say he recommends chieftec as withinl ast years he only had 2 chieftec rma'd and much more ocs, corsair, tagan etc

Chieftec is pure crap compared to Super Flower Golden/Platinum, Seasonic and Corsair digital PSU.

At the top of that Chieftec might be even dangerous PSU.

AX1200i might be one of the best PSUs ever made even wattage is way too high for single/dual GPU rigs. I can't wait for them to release 450-600W version to replace my more than 5 years old HX520W. I dont have any PSU issues with my Corsair but it's age might be risky for the resto of my components.

We need a mod, the last couple of pages have been about anything but GPU's.

I haven't read any GPU reviews and news in a long while, so I'll be lazy and ask here. Is there already a card available which is twice as fast as a HD5850 Xtreme for around 250 euros?

I wouldn't go as far as to say "twice as fast" - that's actually getting pretty tough these days, but *significantly* faster? Sure, plenty, especially for that price Smile You could get a 660ti or a 7950, both of which will soundly destroy the 5850. You could go even cheaper and get one of the 69x0 series - which would also spank the 5850 like a red haired stepchild grinhurt

From an earlier post by sabin:

Quote:

EVGA GTX 660ti-2GBi: £249.95
Sapphire HD 7950-3GB: £239.99

Prices may have dropped since (but I doubt that since it was just a couple of pages back).

I was actually waiting for the 660Ti, but it turned out to be 300 euros here. That's just too much. 250 euros is already stretching my budget by quite a bit.
Is a used 6970 worth 150 euros?

Ouch... sorry, I forgot about currency conversion. The euro was pretty strong not long ago, almost 1:1 on the pound, now it seems it weakened a LOT. £239 is €294 now Shocked And yes, a 6950 is definitely worth €150 .. though you'd probably be best served saving a bit more and doing the larger leap to the 79x0 or 660, at least then you won't have the "Hmm, it's fast but I could have gotten faster" thought stuck in your head.

This defo, hence why i'm waiting for the new nvidia ones to come out before upgrading.
For the current price/performance increase compared to the 6xxx series, it's not worth it Smile

Don't count on it.

Probably not getting anything this year, doesn't seem like Nvidia is ready to push GK110 to the consumer market just yet.

I've got a MSI 6950 with shaders unlocked and it runs all games at max settings without issue. Other than one of the fans going bad on the card I have had no problems and with the fan going bad it just pushed me to water cool it. So now I can o/c the shit out of it.

What Cyb3r says saus. AMD's gonna be first again, quite likely early Q1 with Nvidia to follow suit. It's not going to be a big jump for either, AMD's just doing their usual architecture revision and Nvidia are doing their big die.

Well last time you said that the next nvidia cards ain't going to be gamer ones (or something amongst those lines)
So should i wait then for the series after that or go for the next one?

Well you can keep waiting indefinitely. The next generation from Nvidia's side is not gonna be as big of a jump as you may hope. It's a new generation (like GF110/500 was to GF100/400) and it'll be a big die (GK104 is "AMD" size, GK110 will be another > 500mm^2 chip) but even so, I doubt they'll even get to 50% improvement over the current generation because it's a GPGPU oriented chip, and that'll be with substantially higher consumption and worse thermals, just like GF1x0. Looking at what GF110 did for GF104, 50% is most likely as good as it'll get.

On AMD's side it's the usual tock after the tick, architecture enhancements. Unlikely that they'll do a bigger die, although this iteration may prove more fruitful than the previous ones because it's a new architecture, so they may have some tricks up their sleeve. I expect them to crank up clock speeds substantially as well, Tahiti was clocked very conservatively.

So it's up to you really, I highly doubt we'll see any real information before 2013 about either side; none of the people I keep in touch with have had anything cross their desk/inbox worth mentioning. Both seem to have gone back into their yearly rhythm, so after that it'll be another year for the next top-tier chips.

Well, we will be upgrading as 3 persons at the same time, one of us has a gtx480, one has the HD4890 (my old card) and then there is me with the dual HD6870.
As we all 3 want to upgrade at the same time (and hope to strike a nice deal from the reseller) what would you recommend?

Well, I don't know what you expect when upgrading. Do you want double the performance? If so, nothing for you until 2014 by the looks of it.

Yeah, for a €500+ upgrade, i'm expecting atleast 75% increase. So i guess i'll have to skip this next series and wait for the ones after then?

Isn't that pretty difficult to do just by changing one component?

Sure the GPU usually sees a large performance gain (If not held back too much by CPU.) by upgrading but even 50% is difficult to achieve unless you jump several models ahead.
(Or how to say it, also it depends a lot on the actual software, poor optimization and the like.)

EDIT: That said we'll have to wait and see what the 8000 AMD and 700 series Nvidia cards will be capable of, but it's pretty much like Werelds mentioned earlier.

Just upgraded my old 5850 to a "7870 GHz edition & black edition" today..Was worried that I wouldn't see the "spent $300 US" difference, but happy with the purchase.
Makes a BIG difference in some stressful games, and finally not holding my 2500k back (as much anyway).

Can actually run GTA4, with icehancer without either turning 1/2 of it off, or sub 30FPS now.

Anyone with the money to spend, and with a 5850 or lower, its a hell of a bang for the buck.

Any GPU intensive game you could test which you had played with the HD5850? You'd be doing me a favor. GTA4 is very CPU heavy, so not a very good example.

Maybe Metro 2033. I know it could beat the crap out of my 4850 at the time.

Damn the 7870 looks very good for 225 euros, compared to 300 for the 660Ti. I can sell my 5850 Xtreme for 80 asap, but I can't decide Sad With my luck the 660Ti will get a goddamn pricecut an hour after I buy the 7870.
