Outlast is a new survival horror game from Red Barrels coming in 2013

Outlast is a new survival-horror game from Red Barrels, a new studio formed by industry vets with games such as Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Uncharted adorning their resumes.
Quote:

“In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum . A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

“Acting on a tip from an inside source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line being science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.”

Sounds interesting, and there’s a teaser trailer below for it which gives you a better idea.

“There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them,” said Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels.

“Our team has a lot of previous experience creating big, blockbuster games,” added co-founder David Chateauneuf. “We’re all really excited to see what kind of fear-based emotional rollercoaster we can build on our own!”

Outlast is slated for a PC digital download in 2013.

Releasing a horror game in summer time seems wrong to me.

I don't think Alan Wake would have been as enjoyable had I played it during summer. The rain, lightning and thunderstorm really helped me get in the mood.

"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.

Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

Pfft, I played it when there were 40°C outside, all I had to do was:

Q&A

Q. What is the core experience?
A. You’re a normal human being who has to survive a terrifying journey. You can’t fight the horrors waiting for you in the Asylum, so you'll have to act smart to avoid getting killed… or worse.

Q. Is Outlast a PC exclusive title?
A. We’re focusing on the PC for now, but our goal is to make Outlast available to anyone who wants to play it. It’s just a matter of time and resources.

Q. Is the trailer a pre-rendered cutscene?
A. The trailer is a real-time sequence done in the Unreal Engine. It is highly scripted to better showcase what the finale game will be.

I wonder how similar the gameplay will be to that "scripted" stuff. Body awareness and environment interaction are looking so damn nice...

I think it will be a mix of both scripted events and free gameplay, though I wonder if there will be puzzles or it's just a "Booo->seek and hide type of game". Razz

Dear god I love the full body awareness present. Finally... a game where the character we control isn't just a floating camera and actually obeys the laws of physics. Best part was the hands touching the walls and the crouching actually felt like the character was crouching. Very Happy

1 and 2 are still amazing.

2013 is turning out to be the year of horror as another horror title steps up to take the thrown of scare factors. This is Outlast by developers Red Barrels, the same team that was founded in Montreal from some of the biggest titles we have known, such as Assassin's Creed. Outlast will be the first title from this company, and they aim to push the game into a true survival horror experience. Face your deepest fears in a first person perspective, inside Mount Massive Asylum.

Yeah, the game has the potential of lighting up the current threadbare setup of 'horror' games in which horror is a distorted term described as something only having cinematic approach and visceral action.
