I like Sager Rebalance mod - especially: "The % of aliens 'waiting' on missions has been decreased. This can be good and bad, but the battlefield should feel a bit more dynamic"

I'm curious, how is this patching method called and how it's different?

one thing I've noticed sometimes is that aliens seem to get 2 moves. I'll finish my turn with no one in sight.
Then a group of aliens will seem to move into view, this triggers their "spotted" movie which then triggers them getting a move to cover, at which point they then seem to get a full move after.
For most aliens not a big deal as they tend to back away into cover, but for beserkers, they get the move they made (1-2), the move off the movie, and they seem to get a full move again which means as many as 5 move points in a single turn which could end up putting them right on top of your guys or in a position to attack right away when there was no one there before.

thats why you always have your team in as much overwatch as possible, so they kill off newly spotted enemies right away |
Works sometimes, but even on normal difficulty I've had times where an alien triggers 5 overwatches and no one hits him, even the sniper.
Those are all top line units too. Biggest pile of crap ever.
The way overwatch works, which is retarded, is just an automatic snap shot at the first unit they see, rather than giving control to the unit and allowing them the choice of whether or not theyr'e going to shoot or who they want to shoot at.

The worst is when the entire squads blows their Overwatch shot on a single enemy, then 3 or 4 other aliens get a free pass. Although the Heavy and Support skills that grant additional Overwatch shots are useful in that regard.

Overwatch is every turtler and sniper players dream, they should not make it more powerfull - rather weaken it. I watched an guy playing on impossible and all he did was overwatch untill the enemy closed in, again and again. Wow what a fun time he most have...
But then again I care not for what people do in single player - its in multiplayer where this suck - the attacker is nearly always the sucker because of this = Zzzzz
There are two kinds of people I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

I actually agree completely, I know Overwatch is powerful .. but that's still no reason to waste three or four Overwatch "actions" on a single movement. I kinda hoped each marine would take theirs in turn, rather than unloading simultaneously at the same target.

On the other hand, it is kind of hilarious to see a Muton Berserker get absolutely wasted by a barrage of shots.

Yeah, that's a fair call. They should nerf it for MP. Maybe change it to something like the Assault's Close Combat ability, where it only works over a very short range, or maybe limit it to 1 Overwatch action per turn.

There is nothing overly powerful about overwatch. It's only because of the shitty way this game is made.
Other great games have had the exact same feature in the form of an interrupt chance. Save action points, and if you interrupt you get to move or take a shot or something.
The reason it's so powerful is that:
1) it's 100% reaction rather than some % chance
2) There are no action points, so you can't make a partial move and save some for various activities. it's a shot or nothing. You can choose to toss a grenade, or move or anything else.

So is the multi worth messing with or do mechanics, such as overwatch, ruin it?

Quote: |
Slingshot will serve up new linked Council missions in which players meet an "enigmatic Triad operative, divert an alien ship's course and do battle with the aliens in the skies over China." Three new maps, a new squad character with unique voice and background - the aforementioned Triad, I would assume - and new character customization options will all be included with the package.
|
No price yet, but if the "Elite Squad" skinpack is selling for €5, you can bet this contentomg! pack is going to be €10.

Unless they are introducing some whole other gameplay element, the "do battle with the aliens in the skies over China" bit is going to last all of 10 seconds.
Too be honest, I would have preferred some sort of map expansion pack. This game seems particularly ill-suited to "story-based" DLC.

I'm new to this series and have been playing this the last few days (and failing hard) but don't think I'm doing things right so has anyone got any tips on how to play this more efficiently ?. I've read that researching armour rather than guns is a good thing to do early on and using overwatch is a must (never even knew what it was for).

No one wants this kind of dlc, everyone want them to expand the core game; add new aliens, maps, tech, items, customization and all that jazz, not some shitty mini campaigns.

Proceed very slowly, never run your last guy past the others, one square in the wrong direction can trigger a world of hurt and ruin the mission/kill your team
Personally I used the nano vests for the whole team as soon as I got them, it ups the chance of surviving a crit, far less one hit deaths
I went for laser rifles before the carapace armour, armour is great but you're still going to die if you can't kill the aliens quickly
If a soldier panics once, he/she will keep doing it (without the training school skill), I had a Major panic after taking poison damage on his 3rd move after the initial poisoning, he shot my awesome assault soldier in the face,
there weren't even any aliens left alive
Upgraded snipers with squad sight are amazing, a sniper can't use overwatch after moving but can use it if you switch to the pistol
Triggering the aliens "spotted" animation can make soldiers already set to overwatch fire on them, but removes your overwatch on their turn
I'm sure others can give beter suggestions

I would just say one thing - ive only played classic and impossible, but swapping grenades for Nano vests are a very bad investment. In my first game I did the same when they where researched - mostly because I didnt want to blow the gear up.
But quickly learned that a grenade is your best friend. Use it in a tight spot, use it to blow up cover, use it to level up certain squad members quickly etc etc.
But ofcourse it also depends on play style - but a dead alien hits you 0% of the time

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm already about 1hr into my latest play-through and am using the advice you have given, I'm a few days from getting the carapace armour and still have all my original squad so I think I'll do better this time. I also got 2 satellites in the build queue aswell as an uplink.

Grenades are a must in the early game. IMO you can easily skip the vest and later invest in better armor for your squad (for my second playthrough I'm using a mod which provides 2 slots for armors, so you can equip a grenade with a vest/medkit)
Also another good tip is to wait and build satellites right before the council report in the end of the month. That way you can see which country needs it the most. A country can't leave the council before the end of the month.By launching a sat early on you risk to be given a panic reduction mission in a country you just launched a satellite over and has a decreased panic level.
Hope this helps.

You mean deploy, not build?
Since building takes 20 days.
Anyway, some people have not yet realized that you can build multiple satellites in parallel.
As for the tip what is best time to "build" satellites, I would guess it would be during first 10 days of moth. That way, those satellites can be launched before end of the month.
