I've been gaming with the trusted mouse+keyboard combo for a very long time. Now my accomodation setup had changed (tv, htpc, couch) and I wanted to try playing with gamepad. Got myself wireless xbox controller, but I find myself rather overwhelmed when I try to use it. So far I tried it on Dishonored and Doom3 BFG, but the fast paced combat (doom especially) is too much for me, with thr gamepad.

So... Do any of you have any recommendations? Any newbie-gamepad-user friendly games. Something to ease me into it. ?

I completely agree with garus; try playing classic or recent 2D/2.5D side-scrolling games, such as Trine and Castlevania/Mario. That will ease you into the controls and you'll start getting accustomed to the button layouts.

FPSes in general are not great with a controller. As garus said, try 2D games first, then third-person games like Assassins Creed, or racing games or fighting games. I still stick with my PC for first person shooters, although we sometimes do splitscreen on the tv when friends are over and its bareable then.

Thanks guys. 2D sidescroller it is.... Maybe some slower paced RPGs then. How about Mass Effect - is the combat pausable?

Mass Effect should be okay since, yes, the combat is pausable - but it's not a turn based game, you do still have to aim (somewhat, this IS the 360 we're talking about Very Happy) when you're firing, Xenthalon's suggestion of Assassin's Creed is also a good one - very easy to get into, the controls aren't finicky and the combat is easy, letting you get used to the controls at your own pace. RPGs are perfect also, especially classic and turn based ones.

Play racing games, or Fallout 3, which has that uber-pause VATS mode.

Step 1. Remove 1/2 of brain
Step 2. Praise halo as the best "FPS EVA!"
Step 3. Brag about your amazing 'no scope snipe' skills while denying autoaim assist has anything to do with it.
Step 4. Be sure to call anyone on voicechat "faggot" whenever possible. even when you win.

Follow these steps, and you are well on your way to being a gamepad/controller master! Razz

i find playing non-actiony stealth fps more enjoyable on a controller cos i can take it easy laying down while having the game on the projector
deusex hr and splinter cell

and yea, racing games.. playing something that pretty much requires analog control is a bit silly to play on a keyboard
